What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, I like to speak with the student (if college or adult) or a parent by phone once we have connected, to get a sense of needs, expectations, schedule preferences, time frame and access to materials. That also gives me a sense of our compatibility and the chance to briefly discuss my approach to tutoring. At initial meeting, I prefer to review ongoing work or recent examples as well as discuss creating a flexible, sensible game plan. Before leaping right into the session, I think it's important to just "visit" with the student to learn their interests, attitudes and strengths/challenges. Clear, open communication is key to tutoring success.
