Columbia University Tutors
About
Hi, I'm Sara. I'm a recent graduate of Columbia University and am looking to tutor motivated students. I am well equipped to help a wide range of students, from early readers to high schoolers who are preparing for SAT/ACT/AP/IB tests. I am also happy work with college students who are looking to improve their writing skills and produce academic writing for specific classes.
I am double majored in Political Science and Latin American Politics. I specialize in tutoring for literacy, reading, writing, literature, history, Spanish, and test prep.
My service stands out because of my own experiences as a student, as well as my experiences mentoring and coaching other students.
In 2018-19, I took a gap year to complete a year of service with City Year Dallas, an education non-profit that places educators in classrooms at under-resourced public schools. I worked in a 4th grade Spanish/English bilingual classroom, providing whole-class support and teaching individualized lesson plans to help focus list students meet grade level reading and writing standards.
Previously, I have worked with older students as an employee of the Columbia University Admissions Office. There, I was a student coordinatior for the Undergraduate Recruitment Committee. In this role, I designed programming and organized outreach events. I mentored low-income, high-achieving students, providing guidance throughout their college application process. I helped students write and edit application and scholarship essays, and provided resume coaching and professional development.
I have various other experiences to draw from. I have previously tutored high school students preparing to take the PSAT/SAT as well as AP/IB subject tests. I also spent several months in Cusco, Peru as an English tutor.
I stongly believe in the value of neer-peer mentorship and tutoring. As someone who recently underwent the college application process, I am happy to provide insight, guidance, and tutoring.
I enjoy working with motivated students to improve their understanding of material and reach their full academic potential. Whether it be in terms of test scores or personal statements, I believe that coaching can greatly help students best present themselves and their work.
I take an individualized approach to tutoring and coaching. I meet with students to determine their needs and goals and work out a plan for us to proceed from there.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I will typically do an intake before starting on material to assess students' level of understanding. I will establish students' needs and goals and inquire about learning style.
From there, I will work with the student to form a tutoring plan and begin work on material.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge starting at $40 hourly, but I am flexible and willing to discuss price based on student needs, tutoring location, and number of sessions.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with 4th-12th grade students.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I reccommend that students think about what they want to get from their tutoring sessions. Do they want to improve their grades and test scores? Are they looking for a 1:1 approach to studying material? Do they want to be a better writer?
