How did you get started teaching?
I started tutoring in high school, and noticed that I always got postive feedback and excellent results. I continued doing this in college, where I had a loyal following for Calculus I and II. After I graduated, I learned the ins and outs of the SAT, ACT, GMAT, and GRE, to increase my skill set.
What types of students have you worked with?
All modalities: from learning-differenced to the highest academic profile (including several valedictorians and salutatorians). Watching students find joy in learning, and building their confidence is very gratifying to see.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a tutor in your area of expertise?
1. Find out if s/he can DO the math you're having a challenege with: not all Math tutors and do any area of math.
2. Ask the tutor which areas they are strongest in.
3. It's OK to ask for references.
4. Don't let price scare you: a more seasoned tutor charges his or her rate because of expertise and past excellent history. Cheaper is not better, and may be more inefficient.
What questions should students think through before talking to tutors about their needs?
1. What am I trying to accomplish?
2. For what length of time might I need help?
3. What can I do for myself? What will I need support in doing?
4. What type of learner am I?
