Frequently asked questions

I always want to see where the student is at first. I have them take a pre-assessment appropriate for the class that they are working in and then we will have a discussion about their understanding of what they just took. We will then set up a goals timeline sheet and work from there!

I am in my last semester as a student teacher in the Math Education program at WSU and I will have my license to teach in 7-12 in May. I have been working with students in the classroom for the past two years. I also have been certified as a Supplemental Instruction Leader in Calculus 1 and 2. Additionally I have presented on the topic of effectively working with students in mathematics at a Regional Conference for Supplemental Instruction.

I started teaching and working with students in Math about 3 years ago when I realized it was something I was very passionate about in college. I love to find new ways to help students understand math.

I have mainly worked with High School and College level students. However, I feel very comfortable working with Middle School as well.

One of my favorite moments in teaching was when a group of students I was working with were working at the board and exclaimed that they got it! We had been working on the problem for about fifteen minutes and it was such a joy to see them understand what was going on.

Even people who say they are "good" at math have to get through struggles in it, even if you don't see it. If you feel you are struggling in math, it's a good sign! You might just need some help perservering through it.

Most students don't know what they don't understand. Trying to dig deep into what is tripping a student up can speed up the process of getting that student the help they need.

Try to look at your assignments, tests, and notes. Try to find what is truly making you nervous or giving you a mental block.
