FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Typically, the student sends me the preliminary draft of something he or she is writing. I review it, prepare feedback, and then we go over the document in detail together, either face to face or via Skype.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I'm a professional writer with many books to my credit. Students can check out this aspect of my credentials by looking up Richard Lee Byers on Amazon.com.

I've also taught writing at the college level.

I have a BA and MA in Psychology, and as one would expect, on the way to earning these degrees, I wrote quite a few papers.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

I charge $50 an hour. I don't charge for my preparation or travel time, only the time actually spent face to face or online with the student.

How did you get started teaching?

A number of years ago, I needed retinal surgery and ended up with a big medical bill, more than my writing income alone could handle comfortably. So Istarted teaching to earn the extra money to pay off my doctors and the hospital.

What types of students have you worked with?

Middle school and up. Two recent students are one Ph.D. candidate in Statistics and another person who just received his doctorate in a field related to genetics and medicine. Both of those are Chinese immigrants working to become more fluent in English.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I recently sold a novel to an up-and-coming publisher in Austrailia. The man in charge has big plans for the line and is eager to have me contribute, which is quite gratifying.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Look at this communication with you and see if the tutor's writing seems clear and fluent to you. If his message seems peculiar or awkward, you probably don't want to learn to write like him.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

What are thier goals for the course of study? What strengths do they believe they have, and what weaknesses have they identified?
