About
I hold a current certificate in English Language Arts education (FLDOE #1166116, exp. 2023) and have six years in-classroom teaching experience. I also have several years experience with ESL and adult education. If you are struggling to meet benchmarks, give me a call. All sessions are designed to address individual student needs, not pre-canned worksheets or lessons. Have you been unsatisfied with commercial tutoring? Give me a call.
I enjoy teaching writing and reading because of the world of information these skills unlock.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
All tutoring begins with an interactive assessment (not a TEST) of the student's current abilities and a discussion of the student's goals related to the application and use of English language arts skills.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold a current Florida DOE certificate to teach secondary English Language Arts (grades 6-12, #1166116, exp. 2023). I am also an experienced adult educator. I have been a freelance writer, editor, journalist, and writing coach for more than 15 years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $25 per hour of student contact time. This is inclusive of all expenses. I do not charge separately for travel, or planning time.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching as a writing coach working in community writing groups (adults). I started classroom teaching in 2012 after spending time as a substitute teacher.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from age 12 to 18, and adults up to age 50.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Recently I tutored a Pakistani immigrant in English compositional writing and enjoyed the discussion of perspective and point of view both as cultural issues and how to handle that in her writing.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
A tutor that is the right fit for you should always be "checking in" with you about your sense of your own development, asking questions and offering feedback that give you a sense of your progress toward YOUR goals, not just some standardized benchmark. You should feel enriched by your tutoring, not like a slave to practice.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
You should think about your goals beyond "good grades." English is a skill that unlocks the world. What do you want to unlock with your skills? What job(s) do you want? What will you hope to use your improved skills to achieve for yourself?
