I know how people learn. I take things step by step and make sure each step is not only understood, but that the student feels "ownership" of that skill or knowledge before adding too much more. That makes it easier to learn new things going forward. I also like to make learning fun, so I try to include games, competition, or rewards in learning to make the activity more pleasurable. That makes students want to come back and helps them retain what they learn for a longer period.
I love being around people who are learning something new. I enjoy giving students all the clues to get the wheels turning in their heads and then stepping back and watching as the lightbulbs go on in their brains as they figure it out for themselves! The look of discovery and delight in learners' faces as they realize they can understand something they thought was too difficult for them is a great pleasure for me. Plus I just really enjoy the mechanics of both math and the English language and how it fits together. I've often told my own kids I like editing papers, even at the Masters level, just for recreation. Something about it just relaxes me! 😅

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I usually start out by reviewing what we had gone over the session before that the student had still been struggling with or said they would work on. I do this to help them feel comfortable and get a sense of achievement for what they have already learned and accomplished. Then we look at new topics and activities. I like to see what the student already knows or misunderstands about the topic before I begin teaching. Then I might give a short training on the subject asking lots of questions to confirm understanding. Then we progress to doing exercises, fun reviews, and trying to use the new skill or knowledge in a more relaxed, real life scenario. Throughout the exercises, reviews, and application process, I include lots of encouragement, rewards, and a fun atmosphere for learning. If the student wants, I will give them one or two things to work on before the next session.
