About
I emphasize that there is clearly a difference between “doing the math” versus “understanding the math”. I help students understand that math is a progressive learning experience. As the student advances his/her math studies I show how follow on courses expand on the basic formulas and theorems to solve more complex problems applicable to the real world of science.
I believe in a traditional approach to math. The student needs to understand each basic theorem and formula and view it as a tool for problem solving. I provide outlines and study guides on those theorems and formulas that the student must know. About 2/3 of course material is fundamental and must be thoroughly understood and memorized. I make extensive use of graphs, drawings, and other visualization techniques to help students understand the theorems and problems. The student can then choose the appropriate tool to solve each problem, recognizing that there is usually several ways to approach a problem, It is also important that the student understand the significance and meaning of the solution.
After retiring, I have been able to nurture my passion for helping others in skills that I have a talent for. I have taught the Future Scientists and Engineers of America program for 20 years. I work with intermediate school kids to help them understand basic laws of science and math. I then design and build various projects that the kids can assemble and use to test these principles.
I have been a voluteer tutor for the City of Mssionj Viejo library for over 5 years.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I ask the student how I can best help them. What teaching methods has the student experienced that he/she thinks are most effective. I then share my teaching methodology and try to merge my ideas with what the student thinks would best benefit him/her.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have Bachelors and Masters degrees in Electrical Engineering and an MBA. My work experience is primarily in computer science and control systems for the electric and gas utility industries. I actually used the majority of my college education.
