About

I am a working professional writer, and a former admissions officer at a small, exclusive private university. My master's degree is in film writing and production, and my bachelor's degree is in English. I am extremely passionate about connecting with every student, finding the best way to teach and coach, and helping those I tutor connect to their genuine excitement about their studies. My greatest strengths are explaining complex topics in clear, accessible terms; and a deep well of calm, patient understanding. I can't wait to help you, or the student in your life, get the most out of your studies!

We had a wonderful experience hiring Dave to tutor our high school-aged son. He is a calm, patient and empathetic young man, who clearly cared for and connected with our son, who actually seemed to look forward to his sessions. I give him a strong recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

I always begin with questions. What are our goals for working together? What does success look like for you in this area? What things are currently working well, and what challenges and opportunities can we identify in this area?  This is partially about getting on the same page, and partially about simply landing clearly on what we're trying to do as a team.

The next step is talking about strategy and tactics. What is our plan for the student to get from where they are now to where they want to be? What does that look like over the next weeks and months, and what does that look like each session we meet or talk.

We also need to set the correct expectation of what I will and won't be doing, and why. Tutoring is like coaching in a sport - I'm here to guide you towards your best work, help you identify and overcome obstacles, and give you clear feedback on what's working and what's not. I'm not here to do the practice or play the game for you.

Overall, it's about making a personal connection with a student, helping to clarify *why* we're putting the work in, and making a decision to work together to achieve a common goal.

I've worked professionally as a writer for the last 3-4 years, and have been writing seriously for over a decade. I have a Master's degree in Film (Writing and Production), and a Bachelor's degree in English. I worked for a year as an Admissions Counselor at a small, selective private school. I've been teaching students, primarily in English, Essay Writing and Creative Writing, formally and informally, on and off for about a decade.
