About
For 6 years, I have been working from a place of kindness and care for my students' success. To make tutoring accessible, I offer sessions at a sliding scale of $35-80/hr.
I am motivated by the need to help people by improving a person's learning experience by making things simpler or providing the challenge they crave.

She comes to my home. She seems to be down to earth and to have successfully engaged my teenage grandson. She has been responsive to our concerns and is structuring her tutoring to review foundational material before moving forward. Given that weve only had our first 4 sessions, its too soon to say much more.

Carissa does a great job with our daughter who is currently in AP Calc, and we previously hired her to assist with Algebra II. Carissa is patient, ensures understanding, and keeps moving through the material (not spending time on skills that are understood). We have asked Carissa to tutor both in person and over Zoom at different times, and she has been flexible which is appreciated. She is professional and comes prepared. We would certainly hire her again.

Carissa is wonderful to work with. She has tutored my freshman for several months. She is knowledgeable, reliable, trustworthy & fair. She works with my son’s school to make sure he’s getting the most out of their time together. She has great communication with both myself & my son and is flexible when changes need to be made to schedule.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My first priority is to get to know you and what you're looking for from tutoring. A phone call and a google form (https://forms.gle/DZiDwTJZExjt3Y7u6) build a strong foundation of understanding for me to provide support.
Depending on the subject I may also request sample material from the course before the first session to ensure I can have additional resources available. From there we can set up our first session, arrange payment and work to provide the best support possible.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I earned my Associates of General Studies in 2018 when I graduated from High school, and I am currently finishing my Bachelors of Science in Mathematics at a Liberal Arts University.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My pricing system is a sliding scale of $35-80/hr, based on the level of expertise required and what's reasonable for you financially. Here's a breakdown of suggested rates:
High School & University $55-75
Middle School $45-65
Elementary School $35-55
How did you get started teaching?
I always wanted to understand WHY, and learning on a deeper level has allowed me to use my understanding to help others throughout my academic career. It became second nature for me to help others with their work, and knowing firsthand how valuable receiving tutoring is I wanted to provide that for others.
What types of students have you worked with?
Through private tutoring, community outreach work, and university drop-in hours I work with students at every point in their learning from 3rd grade through University.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A student's parent texted me after a test and said "He got an A!" I was so happy for him, and proud of the work we did for him to achieve the grade.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
How does the person treat the subject? How does the person treat you?
Learning support should be supportive. Having someone emphasize what you can do rather than what you can't makes a huge difference in the student's ability to make progress and build confidence.
I approach problems as a team with my student, working together letting them know it's okay not to know and rightfully applauding them as they progress.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Why do you tutor?
What motivates the tutor can have a substantial impact on how they work with you. I am happiest when I am helping people and so my efforts are centered on finding what works for each individual as a person and a student.
What's your goal for tutoring?
Identifying your goal for tutoring gives the tutor the ability to prioritize how you spend your session time. A session solidifying comprehension is very different from one geared toward last-minute exam preparation, but both are doable!
