About

Being a teacher is in my genes! My mother was a teacher and my grandmother was a teacher. I have over 25 years of experience in the field of education in positions which include: elementary school teacher, mentor teacher, teacher certification field supervisor, K-12 reading specialist/education consultant, principal intern, assistant principal, college instructor, youth education program manager, and K-20 virtual teacher.

I enjoy enabling students to succeed academically - especially those who have not responded well to traditional methods in school. Whether there are learning differences, confidence issues, or emotional blocks, I will design my lessons to meet the individual needs of students. Nothing makes me happier than to help students who are behind to "be on grade level" or to hear parents comment about how much their student's confidence has increased, along with his or her skills.

My effectiveness comes from:

-Traveling to New Zealand, a country with a 99% literacy rate, and implementing the strategies I learned with a similar success rate.

-Working with a comprehension expert and utilizing evidence-based methods that increase students' understanding of text.

-Years of experience teaching reading, math, and writing, and the ability to adapt and intuit what each student needs in the moment to achieve at the highest level of learning.

***My price estimate is $55 per 55-minute session.***

I used Laurie based on her prior glowing reviews and she did not disappoint! She is worth her asking price. I know other people with less expertise may be a little cheaper, but theres a reason. I am so glad we decided to spend a little bit more to get top tier help from her. I couldnt have asked for a better experience and would pay it all again in a heartbeat for the results we got.
My son struggled with math for a couple of years so by the time he was going into 8th grade (the year we hired her) he was already behind. She helped him catch up AND get through 8th grade math! Without her help I dont know what we would have done. (Im serious! I was so stressed out.) And on top of that, my 14 year old who isnt a big fan of school and was definitely NOT a fan of math, never once complained about his weekly tutoring sessions with Laurie. And he was always in a great mood after, with something positive to report! That really said so much to me, along with his scored steadily raising. Math scores this year went from 50% to 80% and still going up!
She really helped with more than just math; she boosted his self esteem and confidence and showed him that he can do so much more in math than he first believed. She also worked with us through a hardship we had and the way she responded to me was with the utmost understanding and respect but I was also met with kindness and generosity. She has excellent communication. Shes just a good person all around. Laurie will be the one I come to in the future for any math help needs without question. Choose her if youre on the fence like I was and you will not be disappointed.

We truly cannot express enough how grateful we are to have found Laurie to be our daughter’s tutor. With her we have the best of both worlds. Laurie is a brilliant instructor, and a very kind individual. She has been infinitely patient in explaining math concepts in a way that they can be easily understood and remembered. We also greatly appreciate the regular updates on her progress and identified areas for improvement. Laurie is always reliable, patient and understanding of life that often throws curveballs on routines and schedules. We have been with Laurie for almost 4 years, she has become so much more than a tutor, she is also a wonderful mentor. Our daughter is thriving and confident under her instruction and now thanks to Laurie she enjoys math!

Laurie is an absolutely amazing tutor. Be aware that when you are hiring Laurie that she is so much more than a tutor. Shes a teacher and it shows. My son is in 5th grade, has fairly extreme adhd, and struggles heavily with reading. We started working with Laurie twice a week last year and he has grown by over 3 grade levels! More important, a child who once hated reading, is finding so much joy in it again! It can be incredibly hard to get him to focus and she does every time. Shes been so incredible that we increased to 4 days a week for the summer. We have worked with her both in person and virtually. Shes awesome for both. Not only is she more than capable in her abilities, but her connection with my child is unmatched. She keeps him engaged and he has a truly awesome relationship with her. Impressed doesnt even cover how I feel. I would be surprised if you could find someone better suited. I was honestly ready to give up on his IEP and just work with Laurie. The comparison between when we started working with Laurie and where he is now is simply astonishing. Hands down the best decision we made for our child. Teaching is truly her calling and it exudes in everything she does. Thank you Laurie!

From our first email, Laurie was professional, kind and knowledgeable. She answered many questions and got to know us before we had even hired her! Covid hit went my daughter was a Kinder, so her reading capabilities were hit hard. Once she was back to in-person school (3rd grade) she was really struggling. Laurie was referred to us when my girl was in 2nd grade, so about 1.5 yrs. had passed before we actually hired her to tutor over her 3rd grade summer. From the first session I knew we made the right decision. My daughter was actually excited about reading, when she never had been before! 2 months with Laurie and she progressed an entire grade level! Not only that, but my daughter didnt want to stop! Laurie ignited a love for reading my daughter never had in just 2 short months! Give Laurie a shot, you wont regret it! She loves what she does and passes on that love for reading to her students!

I am beyond thankful to have found Mrs. Laurie. When I began this journey back in April I was a very concerned parent my daughter had been diagnosed with deslexia and was 1.5 Years behind in reading due to covid and virtual learning. Not only was I able to hire Mrs Laurie for in person 1 on 1 but she helped me feel at ease when i was in a world of Loss. My daughter adores Mrs Laurie and loves seeing her; she has built her own custom learning plan for my child and she has done a fantastic job. My daughters self esteem is coming back and she feels excited to learn again even better in these 4.5 months she is almost on grade level. Mrs Laurie was a blessing in disguise and not only has help my child but also helped me to learn different learning approaches and methods. 5 stars arent enough she deserves a million!

    Frequently asked questions

First, I talk to the student (or parent/guardian for younger students) about what he/she/they want and need from tutoring. We will discuss best learning styles and approaches, and where the student needs to begin. I will ask for feedback along the way, in order to ensure we are working together in the best way possible, and are getting the wanted results.
