About

Being a teacher is in my genes! My mother was a teacher and my grandmother was a teacher. I have over 25 years of experience in the field of education in positions which include: elementary school teacher, mentor teacher, teacher certification field supervisor, K-12 reading specialist/education consultant, principal intern, assistant principal, college instructor, youth education program manager, and K-20 virtual teacher.

I enjoy enabling students to succeed academically - especially those who have not responded well to traditional methods in school. Whether there are learning differences, confidence issues, or emotional blocks, I will design my lessons to meet the individual needs of students. Nothing makes me happier than to help students who are behind to "be on grade level" or to hear parents comment about how much their student's confidence has increased, along with his or her skills.

My effectiveness comes from:

-Traveling to New Zealand, a country with a 99% literacy rate, and implementing the strategies I learned with a similar success rate.

-Working with a comprehension expert and utilizing evidence-based methods that increase students' understanding of text.

-Years of experience teaching reading, math, and writing, and the ability to adapt and intuit what each student needs in the moment to achieve at the highest level of learning.

I am beyond thankful to have found Mrs. Laurie. When I began this journey back in April I was a very concerned parent my daughter had been diagnosed with deslexia and was 1.5 Years behind in reading due to covid and virtual learning. Not only was I able to hire Mrs Laurie for in person 1 on 1 but she helped me feel at ease when i was in a world of Loss. My daughter adores Mrs Laurie and loves seeing her; she has built her own custom learning plan for my child and she has done a fantastic job. My daughters self esteem is coming back and she feels excited to learn again even better in these 4.5 months she is almost on grade level. Mrs Laurie was a blessing in disguise and not only has help my child but also helped me to learn different learning approaches and methods. 5 stars arent enough she deserves a million!

Laurie has an incredible way of learning how each person learns and communicates. Its almost like she is in your brain and can read your mind. Her flexibility is unwavering. Each person learns differently, and she certainly has the knack to unlock this! A total gift! You would be beyond lucky to hire her.

Laurie has helped our family, via our children through many grade levels, with tremendous patience and insight into what makes students respond in positive, productive ways academically.
She does this by using a growth mindset and through her years of on-the-job experience. She is a confidence booster for our children!

My second grade daughter was challenged by “zoom school” and was home half the week while I worked for the whole 20-21 school year. The hour she was with Laurie was the guaranteed time I knew she was learning, laughing, curious, engaged, and also the only slam dunk for getting homework done.
The majority of the skills she learned during second grade were during her 1:1 tutoring sessions. She makes learning fun! I can’t recommend her enough!

Laurie began tutoring my grandson during distance learning and continued when his school was on a hybrid schedule. Lauries experience and talent as a classroom educator—including knowing the importance of a childs social and emotional development—was apparent from early on. She made learning fun for my grandson.
Even during the summer break, my grandson was disappointed if he had to miss a tutoring session. Lauries tutoring made it so that my grandson not only enjoys reading and math more than ever, but hes now two or three grade levels ahead.
I highly recommend Laurie as a tutor. Teaching and tutoring is clearly her calling.

    Frequently asked questions

First, I talk to the student (or parent/guardian for younger students) about what he/she/they want and need from tutoring. We will discuss best learning styles and approaches, and where the student needs to begin. I will ask for feedback along the way, in order to ensure we are working together in the best way possible, and are getting the wanted results.
