About
Hi!
My name is Neil and I have been an educator for 15+ years. I've had the opportunity to teach and tutor students from grades K-12, with various learning needs and levels.
I am currently a certified 4th-grade teacher in the Marysville School District and teach/tutor a variety of subjects, including:
- K-8 math
- Reading
- Writing
- Science
- Social Studies/History
I can work with students in a public setting, such as the public library, or online via Zoom. I look forward to helping you learn!
As an educator, I understand how difficult it is for each student to meet their individual learning needs.
I enjoy tutoring because it allows me to work specifically with students to address their needs.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Before working with a new student, I like to meet with the parents and students for an initial consultation to see if we are a good match. This is done online on Zoom.
In this consultation, we'll discuss what needs the students have and if I am able to be of service.
If we determine that we are a good fit for each other, I will want to gather some information in the form of standardized test scores, in-class assessments, or any other student work so I can identify specifically how I can help.
At this point, I will come up with a lesson plan of how I can best serve the student in tutoring sessions.
Tutoring sessions may be done in a public setting, such as the public library, or online via Zoom.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a credentialed teacher, specializing in K-8 general education.
I also keep up to date with my teaching practice in regular training and inservices.
My degrees include:
Bachelor of Science in Applied Arts and Sciences Kinesiology (San Diego State, 2005)
Master of Arts in Teaching ( San Diego Christian College, 2019)
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
In-person tutoring session: $60 per hour
Online tutoring session: $50 per hour
How did you get started teaching?
I started substitute teaching after my undergraduate studies in San Diego. On the side, I worked on my teaching credential and eventually became a credentialed teacher.
I have worked in various schools and environments over my 15+ years of teaching.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with students of diverse backgrounds and learning levels, including:
- English Language Learners
- Students with special needs
- Students performing above or below grade level
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I have done extra tutoring with one of my fourth-grade students. In the classroom, it is difficult to address the individual needs of this student.
However, with extra tutoring sessions, this student has improved her math assessment scores and has an overall better feeling about math.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
1. Work with someone you feel comfortable with. Ask questions about them.
2. Ask specifically how a tutor can help their specific needs. There is a wide range of subjects, and not all tutors are able to help all students with their specific needs.
3. Be clear on what the expectations are before tutoring starts. Know where the sessions will take place, how much the rate is and when tutoring sessions will take place.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
- What are the goals for tutoring? Is it to pass a class or to develop overall learning growth?
- Are there any barriers to a successful tutoring session? Are there any factors that would prevent a student from benefitting from tutoring? Simply meeting for a tutoring session will not guarantee success.
