What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I go through essential concepts and have students solve previous midterms/exams, and link the concepts and questions for a more comprehensive understanding.
I also make sure to have regular meetings every week so that the student can explain what he/she did during the past week and revise the portions that the student is weak at.
