Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Find out what they are having problems with, often by asking to see their work or just talking with the student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
MA in Mathematics from UVA, and current teaching license for Virginia. Many years of continuing education classes to keep license current, and active enrollment in professional teacher organizations, NCTM and VCTM.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Precalculus, Dual Enrollment Calculus $50 per hour
AP Calculus, College Algebra, Statistics (NO AP STATS) - $50 per hour
Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 $40 per hourHow did you get started teaching?
I first started teaching in 1973 right out of college, but took a sabbatical to raise my children for about 7 years. I got back into teaching in 1984, and taught in a variety of settings from then until 2013. I have experience teaching Middle School, High School, College (Undergraduate), and Graduate School, as well as doing staff development with teachers.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of all ability levels, from special needs students through gifted and talented students. I have an endorsement in Gifted Education.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Don't be afraid to ask questions, and do your best to make a connection with the tutor. IF you don't like the tutor or dont understand what they are telling you, then it is time to find another tutor.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
For math, it is important for the student to do their best to figure out what it is that they don't understand. To tell someone you don't understand without providing more specifics is difficult for a tutor to work with. Do you understand what the problem is asking for, or what the procedures for solving are, or do you understand the underlying concepts? The more insight you can provide the better the tutor can serve your needs.
