About

I have been tutoring for the past year with a company called NovaStar Prep but am looking to grow my clientele. I have a Bachlor's and Master's degree in Engineering from Villanova University and therefore am very comfortable with tutoring in mathematics. I am an energetic 25 year old starting out in the DC area and have a passion for math that can be seen in my teaching sessions.

My LinkedIn profile can be found here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/philip-armstrong-30042b83/

I very much enjoy teaching students how to enjoy math. I especially like seeing how a student's confidence grows once I am done with my lessons. Math has always been my favorite subject and I am excited to help some students overcome their challenges with it!

Philip is a tremendous Algebra II tutor. He helped build our daughter’s confidence and problem-solving skills, and is patient and thorough in his instruction. He even reached out to the teacher to begin teaching our daughter more advanced concepts. Philip is engaging and can keep our daughter’s interest and redirects her, as needed. His effort shows as he helped our daughter raise her grade two letter grades, as well as, prepare for topics on the SAT. We highly recommend Philip!

Frequently asked questions

My process includes a general introduction followed by an indepth discussion about what parts of their math assignment they find the most challenging. Then, we will get right into the issues with the processes they are trying to master. I always allow the student to teach me while I offer corrections if necessary. I like for the student to be in control in walking me through their thought process first before I offer my suggestions. It is important for the lesson to not entirely be a lecture from me.

I have a B.S. and M.S. in engineering from Villanova University and I currently tutor for a company called NovaStar Prep based in Northern Virginia. I have six weekly students currently.

No.

I have always worked with kids (from highschool through college) and I wanted to earn an extra income to pay off some of my student debt. Tutoring allows me to work with students in a subject matter that I am passionate about.

I have worked with Middle School and High School Students.

Recently, my student earned a 95 on his math exam after earning consistent B's and C's and he wrote me a note of how excited he was. It was very rewarding!

I would honestly look for teachers who are passionate about what they do like I am. There are a lot of instructors who don't actually enjoy teaching.

What their goals and expectations are for the tutor. Passing a course and earning an A are very different goals so it is important to be transparent with their own expectations.
