Teaching is something that is done very frequently, but very rarely done well. Say for example you wanted to teach a seventh grader that light travels at a fixed speed. You should start by telling them “ Did you know that even if the sun disappeared, we would still be able to see it in the sky for about 8 minutes?”, this will surprise them and even confuse them a little, and that is what you want because it will pique the child’s curiosity. Most “regular” teachers would simply tell the student the speed, give them a formula to memorize and tell them it will be in the next physics quiz.
Discovery comes by first observing an anomaly, then doing research and finally reaching a conclusion. I believe that those same principles should be used when teaching, I believe students should be given the thrill of discovery.
I have been lucky enough to work both with elementary and kindergarten level students. Both have been an absolute delight, granted they each came with their own difficulty. Not every kid is the same, not everyone can adapt to one style of teaching, not to mention the variety of households and upbringing; that is why I have had to learn to customize the information for every single one of my students.
