About this tutor

Hello, I have been tutoring upper level math for 13 years. I have a bachelors in Chemical Engineering and a Master's in Education with a Concentration in Math. I was a HS Engineering teacher in Alexandria, VA at a STEM Academy. I have tutored physics, and math from grade 1 to Calculus. I look forward to helping students increase scores tremendously in their subject areas.

The main thing is I love math and my goal for every student is to decipher it and make sure they understand how the concepts works and if they develop a small love in the process that is a win. Thanks for yor time.

I LOVE,love,Love Math! I have always love it. There are many ways to get to an answer to a problems but there is only one answer.

Normally the reason why people don't get math is because they have been taught the wrong way. Normally when I start, I stress the fact that everyone can do math. Normally through the process of tutoring, they eventually start to get it. I enjoy watching students progress toward being confidently engaged in math problems. It really does change their life.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

It normally depend what the students needs are. If they student is there to improve grade to an "a" then I assess them to see where their problems are or look at their tests.

If the student is there because they are in danger of failing then I start from the fundamentals of the subject to make sure they understand those concepts. Then I work my way up. Because we live in VA, the SOL released test are always a good way to assess student's understanding.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I started tutoring elementaray students during my sophomore year of college. I continued tutoring every semester through graduation.Once I graduated I was asked by a friend if I could tutor his daughter and I didn't know what to charge. So he helped me out and I have been tutoring now since 2004.

I also was an High School Engineering Teacher for a local STEM Academy for 4 years. Engineering is really just applying math to some science based subject.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

Yes...I try to keep it simple.

Grade Level Math (under Pre-Alegebra):$40

Alegebra I, II, Geometry:$50

Trigonometry, Statistics, Pre-Calculus:$60

How did you get started teaching?

I was working for General Motors and the company closed down and so I had a love for math so I started tutoring math to High School Students. It eventually turned into a full-time teaching job.

What types of students have you worked with?

I work with all students above grade 4. Normally before that greade, Math is not stressed. I tutor a wide range of students. I have students that have scored perfect on ACT/SATs. I also have students that are in danger of failing a math subject and need intervention. Whatever the needs are the students are I normally can help.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I had a 5th grade student that really hated math. She would get so frustrated that she would cry during our sessions. After 6 months of tutoring, she passed her SOL, which she had never done previously. The next year she went on to get an "A" in math and has progressed each year. I was so excited for her.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a tutor in your area of expertise?

Test the tutor. Make sure they have the skills necessary to teach your child. Make sure to get references. Also make sure that the tutor can relate to the child. There are a lot of smart tutors but some have trouble explaining the concepts where kids can understand.

What questions should students think through before talking to tutors about their needs?

First they should start at school. Are they doing their classwork and homework. Then are they asking their teacher for help. As a former teacher they are normally willing to help struggling students.

Before a tutored is hired, they should start with school help first because once they get tutoring help, they will still need to do those things to stay on track.
