My tutoring focuses on the classical method of education: multisensory intensive phonics, traditional grammar, including sentence diagramming, explicit structure and style writing lessons, and great literature to inspire students to master reading for themselves.
The English language has over a million words, yet only 45 sounds of speech. When the 70 basic phonograms and 28 spelling rules are mastered early in life, no word is impossible to sound out phonetically.
Many of my students have moved from being non-readers and behind by several grade levels to excellent readers and writers, able to tackle any reading or writing assignment with skills learned through guided practice.
The best times for me are when I am watching a former non-reader, who lacked skill and confidence, read fluently and easily retell a story in his own word. Since during the first few minutes of each lesson, we warm up with a great read-aloud, many are introduced for the first time to great literature by Tomie DePaulo, Marjorie Priceman, Shakespeare, Dickens, C.S. Lewis, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and other great authors. This makes my work a joy and not a job.
Susan is very skilled in using the Spell to Write and Read curriculum and helped my struggling reader grasps the foundational skills she needed to now enjoy reading! The hour-long lessons were broken up into a variety of activities so it was very manageable for my active 8-year-old. She reads beautiful books, uses the SWR lessons, and also includes fun games for practicing the spelling lists. So thankful for the time Susan spend with my daughter and I would highly recommend her tutoring services!
My daughter has enjoyed working with Susan. She is very patient, organized and thorough. I love the confidence she has given her to succeed. I would recommend classical starts tutoring, you wont be disappointed!
Overall great experience. My daughter really enjoyed the time with her tutor and liked the additional work given on vocab a-z and Quizlet. We look forward to going back to our sessions soons
First, I get to know the reason the parent is seeking a tutor, then I administer a free reading assessment. We discuss what has been done to correct the issue. And I offer my suggestions for how to correct the problem.
My bachelor's degree is in Secondary Education with majors in English and Speech/Play Directing. I have attended workshops by endorsed Spell to Write and Read trainers and have experience using Spalding/Sanseri direct instruction in intensive phonics with my own children, elementary and middle school struggling readers in a charter school in Texas. My private tutoring students and intervention students progress rapidly from two or more grade levels below their current grade. Usually, half of the small group students move from Tier 3 to Tier 1 in less than a semester.
Private tutees progress at a more rapid rate, some making twograde level advances in just two months.
My clients pay for the month's sessions on the first of each month. I charge a flat rate monthly based on $55/hour for 4 weeks of tutoring.
