Class Of KC
About
Kyna, a Pre-Ap English and History teacher, proves if students are taught up to the next level, their lives will be lifted up as well; their futures are on the line.
She graduated from Prairie View A&M University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. Her talents, gained from years of studying and teaching experience, allow Kyna to breakdown complex concepts to her students and bring out the best in those who are or want to be challenged by their English courses and examinations.
Kyna is available to tutor in all aspects of the English language and written communication: literature comprehension, grammar mechanics, and expository essay writing. She also tutors students to prepare for Reading STAAR, Writing STAAR, and PSAT examinations.
The process is what I enjoy from start to finish. It's not just about helping a student understand any misconceptions they may have; taking them from ground zero, equipping them with the skillsets they need (reading comprehension & critical thinking), and opening their young eyes to new possibilities gives me chills.
I also love to create engaging, fun lessons while providing students with visually appealing, original resources that will make them want to put their pen to the paper.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
New students under my care are asked to explain what areas they struggle and excel in, why they believe they don't understand, and what strategies their current teachers utilize in class. This short answer assessment provides me with background knowledge regarding the student's strengths and weaknesses from their point of view.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My current district provides its teachers many opportunities to attend professional development. A few trainings I have attended: Teachers Write!, Rice Pre-Ap English, AVID Summer Institute, Gretchen Bernabei Writing
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Scheduled, 60 minute sessions @ $50
Price is negotiable if multiple sessions are scheduled for the week.
How did you get started teaching?
My mentor/grandmother, a master teacher in her own right, instilled the importance of education in me from a young age and I have carried that sentiment ever since. To build experience while studying for the certification exam, I worked as a substitute full-time and after obtaining a certified status, I was hired by the district who currently employs me.
What types of students have you worked with?
The students I service range from below, on and above grade level. My classes consist of Pre-Ap English courses and On-level English courses. SPED students are included within my rosters and they are provided with accommodations if needed.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Don't be afraid to ask questions about what they can do for you and what makes them an expert. No student should have to waste time with a teacher who does not understand their needs and cannot help them achieve their goals.
