Hello! My name is Ashlynn Johnston, and I am a passionate, certified teacher who is seeking to help children grow academically. I currently teach fourth grade but have experience in other grade levels. I specialize in math and writing instruction but can also teach reading, science, and social studies. I believe in also teaching students life skills (study habits, growth mindsets, etc) that will help them to become lifelong learners.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to begin by assessing my student to see what they actually need. We find their strengths and weaknesses, and together, we create a plan that is empowering for them. I seek to find the learning style of my student and teach in a way that engages them. Do they learn throughh discussions? Do they learn by playing games? My instruction is completely student focused and data driven.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a certified teacher for students kinder through 6th grade, but I also have experience tutoring middle school and high school. I have both taught and tutored for many years for a variety of subjects.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $50 per hour of instruction, but I am flexible and willing to work with families that are struggling financially.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Come with specific questions! The better you can identify your needs, the better equipped we are to help you. For example, instead of "I don't get math", say, "I'm struggling with questions about place value and fractions".
