Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
At Charanya's Math Tutoring we know everyone is different and they learn differently. We take a tailor made approach in first assessing strengths and areas for development for our students. This helps us in defining a customized curriculum that is most beneficial for our students. Moreover, we teach in a 1:1 or sometimes small group setting to give everyone personalized attention that they deserve.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Mr. Charanya's background is in Engineering, however with a very strong passion for teaching, he has focused 35+ years of professional career teaching in schools and universities and his own private tutoring (25+ years). Having taught in a school and university systems, Mr. Charanya nest understands areas that don't quite work too well in bigger group setting and has mastered the art of personalized 1:1 tutoring.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Pricing varies by level of Math for each student. For example Grade 5 Math would price less than Grade 11 Math (e.g. Algebra II or Pre-Calculus). Also, price for each student will vary depending on frequency recommended/ requested. Some students prefer and need a bit more attention up front with tutoring 4x a week.
How did you get started teaching?
Teaching and imparting knowledge has been a passion from the very beginning for me. Post graduation from University, I had been practicing Electrical Engineering. However, I never gave up teaching students Math and Physics on the side. Very quickly, the pool of students needing support grew and I switched to my passion of teaching full-time. This was over 35 years ago and I have continued to love teaching ever since.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all kinds of students --
1) Various grade levels in high school and university (grade II all the way to University level Math of Calculus II)
2) Majority of students in high school preparing for college entrance exams (e.g. SAT I, SAT II, ACT) and those looking to prepare for post-graduate education (e.g. GRE, GMAT)
3) Professionals looking to up-skill or even re-enter the work force.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I should say I am quite proud of all my students as they have all demonstrated improvement in their Math scores (whether in be in the forms of upcoming tests, midterms, SAT scores). I am particularly proud of students who learn to translate what they learn from Charanya's Math Tutoring in terms of methodology and approach of how to tackle unique problems and apply to other subjects in school as well.
Most recently, a student who has been coming to Charanya's Math Tutoring for 4 months now (started our Summer program) completely turned around his scores. He demonstrated a 40 pt lift in his Math scores and an average of 25 percent improvement in Science, History and English as well.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would suggest to students out there looking for tutors to be wary of two things --
1) Qualifications and experience of tutors out there in the market - quite often students and parents of students have come to me upset about their previous tutoring experiences where qualifications of tutors were drastically inflated in the past.
2) Know that everyone learns differently. You need a tutor who is able to personalize his approach based on his/her experience and is able to tailor a curriculum that best suits your needs. The one-size-fits-all approach just doesn't cut it when ti comes to tutoring a subject like Math.
