About
I am a student majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry at College of Charleston, on my journey to medical school. In high school I tutored in the sciences as well as english and am picking that back up again. I believe that students need to find a style of learning that works for them and helps them truly retain information and my goal is to teach life long learning skills. When graduating from High School I had a 1250 on my SAT, a 29 on my ACT and a weighted GPA of 4.3 and this is because I was able to find a style of learning that worked for me. I believe that anyone is capable of achieving their desired grades as long as they are willing to learn.
I love helping students learn new concepts that they may have thought they just could not understand. I think that so often students get stuck because they do not understand the way that a concept is being explained, but in a one-on-one tutoring session you can explain things in a variety of ways to be sure that the concept sticks.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I tend to start by assessing strengths and weaknesses and having the student tell me what study habits have worked for them in the past. Then I tend to tailor lessons to that individual, whether that be lots of drawings to illustrate complex topics and systems, or working through problems together to make a student more comfortable.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a Biology student myself with a minor in Chemistry, but I also took a fair amount of AP classes in high school--including English, statistics, and chemistry.

How did you get started teaching?
Originally I started tutoring my younger sister in Algebra and Chemistry, and then I began tutoring students through out my school system. I have the most experience in the general sciences as well as in English, but I have tutored in lower level algebra classes too.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have primarily worked with students ranging from ages 11-16.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would say to look for a tutor who is willing to tailor the experience to you, someone who has multiple ways of explaining a concept to be sure that you understand it.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1. Am I willing to look at topics from a new perspective?
2. What are my goals? Is there a specific test you are studying for or do you want to learn general skills that help you study?
3. What style of learning do you enjoy most? Are you a visual learner, auditory, kinetic? It is fine if you do not know, but thinking of experiences where you did really well can be helpful for a tutor to understand how you learn best.
