Good, proper tutoring should help the students become an independent learner, who acquires critical learning skills and helps them learn how to help themself. Anyone who has taught and done the research for more than a few years has undoubtedly pushed ideas that needed amendment. When a graduate student makes me see the flaws in one or more of my ideas, I am excited by the new knowledge that I’ve gained. Second, on those occasions when the dialectic in the classroom makes me amend my views, I know that the class discussion has worked. We have had a genuine dialogue and a better argument has emerged. That is exciting.” Follow me on Linkedln : ...

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Tutors.

What is special education tutoring?

Special education tutors help students with mild to severe cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities. Special needs tutors modify the general education curriculum to meet the child's individual needs and involve themselves in each student's social and behavioral development.

What is disability in special education?

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) identifies 13 disability categories where special education should be provided.

  • Auditory Impairment (AI) – refers to a hearing loss not categorized by deafness.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – mainly affects a child's social and communication skills and behavior.
  • Deafness – covers kids who can't hear most or all sounds, even with a hearing aid.
  • Deaf-Blindness (DB) – covers kids with both severe hearing and vision loss that requires unique programs.
  • Emotional Disturbance (ED) – various mental health issues such as anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and depression.
  • Intellectual Disability (ID) – covers disabilities such as below-average intellectual abilities, poor communication or social skills, and poor self care. One example is down syndrome.
  • Multiple Impairments (MI) – a child with multiple disabilities in this list.
  • Orthopedic Impairment (OI) – covers impairments in kids who lack function or ability in their bodies, such as cerebral palsy.
  • Other Health Impairment (OHI) – conditions that limit a child's strength, energy, or alertness such as ADHD.
  • Specific learning disability (SLD) – conditions such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, auditory processing disorder, or nonverbal learning disability.
  • Speech or Language Impairment (SI) – covers difficulties such as stuttering, pronouncing words, making sounds with the voice, or understanding words.
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) – injury to the brain caused by a physical force.
  • Visual Impairment / Blindness (VI) – covers both partial sight and blindness.

Reviews for Philadelphia special education tutors

Since starting reading tutoring with Anne-Marie Coakley, our son has flourished! Anne-Marie took time to get to know our son early on and made an immediate connection with him, setting him at ease. He frequently mentions how awesome she is and how much fun tutoring is! Not only has his reading skills improved exponentially, but his self confidence is rising and he no longer puts himself down. He actively reads road signs and his surrounds, wants to play games that require reading, and even helps his sibling with their homework! We can tell he feels more on pace with his classmates and has excelled in other subjects too! We are so happy with our decision to hire Anne-Marie!

She has been tutoring my son for at least five years, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the impact she’s had. She has supported him in all subjects, especially math, where we’ve seen significant improvement. What truly sets her apart is the way she makes learning interesting and engaging for him, something that isn’t always easy to do. Her patience, consistency, and genuine care have played a big role in his academic growth and confidence. I highly recommend her to any family looking for a dedicated and effective tutor.

Thomas is an absolute godsend. My son struggles badly with math but being a computer major, there's alot of math. Thomas explains it all in a way that my son isn't just memorizing formulas, he is actually understanding it. No more math classes without Thomas!

Miss. Mei has been working with us for some weeks now, and Im already seeing big positive changes in my child and I requested her if I could leave her a review. Miss. Mei’s way of interacting with kids, her preparations for every class, her ongoing discussions with parents and her background being an experienced DOE teacher were some of the things that I really liked. She has great strategies. We work together as a team. My child loves her classes and always looks forward to it. Ms. Mei is very encouraging and has a positive outlook. She is sensitive to the overall needs of a child and plans her lessons accordingly. She even took the initiative of collaborating with the school teachers for maximal outcome. I’m very glad that I got in touch with Ms. Mei. I was looking for tutors online and feel very lucky to have found her. A Right teacher at the right time. My best wishes to Miss. Mei.
