Delilah A. says, "Helpful and Patient tutor Sister Solona showed up on time, had great communication, and was very patient with my child. Unfortunately I can’t afford regular tutoring at the time but the one time session was helpful and I would recommend her to anyone seeking tutoring to a child. Amber C. says, "We've been working with Liz twice a week for a month now and it has been such a wonderful experience. When we started our 7th grader was in pre-algebra, feeling defeated, lack of confidence, and lacking some fundamentals, and now she is confident, feeling incredible, and carrying an A in math. Liz takes the time to work with her and shows so much patience. She is sweet, funny, kind, and very knowledgeable about all levels of math. She has a warm personality and my daughter loves meeting with her each week. We feel so lucky to have found Liz! We can't thank you enough :)" Read more

Your special needs tutoring questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Tutors.

What is special education tutoring?

Special education tutors help students with mild to severe cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities. Special needs tutors modify the general education curriculum to meet the child's individual needs and involve themselves in each student's social and behavioral development.

What is disability in special education?

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) identifies 13 disability categories where special education should be provided.

  • Auditory Impairment (AI) – refers to a hearing loss not categorized by deafness.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – mainly affects a child's social and communication skills and behavior.
  • Deafness – covers kids who can't hear most or all sounds, even with a hearing aid.
  • Deaf-Blindness (DB) – covers kids with both severe hearing and vision loss that requires unique programs.
  • Emotional Disturbance (ED) – various mental health issues such as anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and depression.
  • Intellectual Disability (ID) – covers disabilities such as below-average intellectual abilities, poor communication or social skills, and poor self care. One example is down syndrome.
  • Multiple Impairments (MI) – a child with multiple disabilities in this list.
  • Orthopedic Impairment (OI) – covers impairments in kids who lack function or ability in their bodies, such as cerebral palsy.
  • Other Health Impairment (OHI) – conditions that limit a child's strength, energy, or alertness such as ADHD.
  • Specific learning disability (SLD) – conditions such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, auditory processing disorder, or nonverbal learning disability.
  • Speech or Language Impairment (SI) – covers difficulties such as stuttering, pronouncing words, making sounds with the voice, or understanding words.
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) – injury to the brain caused by a physical force.
  • Visual Impairment / Blindness (VI) – covers both partial sight and blindness.

He’s an absolute beast—knows his stuff inside and out. But what really makes him stand out is how easy he is to relate to. You never feel dumb around him, no matter what you’re asking. You can bring up any question, even the ones you might think are “stupid,” and he’ll break it down without making you feel small. Solid person all around.

I cannot seem to put into words how much Liz has helped (and continues to help) my son. Finding her has made the difference between a timid, shy but intelligent kid who had no confidence in himself who is blossoming into a confident and successful student. Her passion for teaching shines through in every lesson and we count ourselves lucky for having the opportunity to work with her. Her interactions with my son have quickly become a bright spot in our lives. Trust me, she's that good.

Due to sickness, my daughter missed a couple of weeks of school and was left with a dozen of makeup work. Alliea worked with my kid for the entire quarter to help her with maths, and it paid off!!! Thank you for your patience and ability to clearly and your sense of humor to explain those concepts!

Lucy was so great and patient with me since writing is not my best area. She helped with a final paper that was worth more than half of my grade. She was so helpful and flexible. Thank you
