Haider K. says, "Jessica is a amazing tutor she was able to help my daughter improve her grades in both math and chemistry. My daughter didn’t, hated both actually, but Jessica, seemingly with ease, was able to change the Cs to As. Now she is becoming extremely interested in STEM and told me she thinks her dream may be to become an engineer just like Jessica." Read more

As a current college student with 4+ years of tutoring experience, all K-12 material is still quite relevant and fresh in my mind. I have worked with a variety of ages, from kindergarten all the way to seniors in high school. I get to know each student individually as well as get to know their personal goals. I will provide quick, concise responses for those in a hurry, and slow, methodic teaching for those looking to understand the material on a deeper level. I welcome parent feedback and will alter my methods based on parental goals as well.

My name is Ilham Khalil and I have alot of knowledge and experience with students. I was a teacher for 15 years and have a personal love of learning. Because of my educational background (psychology, theology, biology, occupational therapy) as well as my love of learning I have gained a vast amount of knowledge in many subject areas. I know how to approach students in a fun and creative way so they can absorb material quickly and efficiently.

What is special education tutoring?

Special education tutors help students with mild to severe cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities. Special needs tutors modify the general education curriculum to meet the child's individual needs and involve themselves in each student's social and behavioral development.

What is disability in special education?

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) identifies 13 disability categories where special education should be provided.

  • Auditory Impairment (AI) – refers to a hearing loss not categorized by deafness.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – mainly affects a child's social and communication skills and behavior.
  • Deafness – covers kids who can't hear most or all sounds, even with a hearing aid.
  • Deaf-Blindness (DB) – covers kids with both severe hearing and vision loss that requires unique programs.
  • Emotional Disturbance (ED) – various mental health issues such as anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and depression.
  • Intellectual Disability (ID) – covers disabilities such as below-average intellectual abilities, poor communication or social skills, and poor self care. One example is down syndrome.
  • Multiple Impairments (MI) – a child with multiple disabilities in this list.
  • Orthopedic Impairment (OI) – covers impairments in kids who lack function or ability in their bodies, such as cerebral palsy.
  • Other Health Impairment (OHI) – conditions that limit a child's strength, energy, or alertness such as ADHD.
  • Specific learning disability (SLD) – conditions such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, auditory processing disorder, or nonverbal learning disability.
  • Speech or Language Impairment (SI) – covers difficulties such as stuttering, pronouncing words, making sounds with the voice, or understanding words.
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) – injury to the brain caused by a physical force.

Reviews for Houston special education tutors

Recent success stories from people in the Houston area.
Tori H.
Jessica was experienced, knowledgeable, & positive. She really is able to think out of the box to come up with so many creative ways to teach the material, which is what she did until she learned what helped my son & daughter, who both had different needs & learning styles. They went from timid & shy answering questions to barely being able to contain themselves for their turn to speck up. They were always excited for their session, which was great. The enthusiasm they showed after their lessons to share their new knowledge with their father & me warmed our hearts as you could just feel the pride beaming from them..& us. I couldn’t imagine anyone I would trust with my kids more to guide them to both success now as well as their drive to keep learning & being the best in the future, which she gave them the confidence & tools to do. We are thankful for her everyday!

Ben (our daughters tutor) has increased her understanding significantly. He works on what her needs are, not pre-canned curriculum that doesn't help her in her classes. He comes right to the house. I can't say enough good things!
