# Tinkering With Numbers

## About

For the past 2 years, I've worked as a tutor in the Writing Center, helping students revise their papers and improve their writing. I've also led the tutoring of Latin grammar at my school. Most importantly, I was a leader of the Math Society and presented on complicated topics such as Knot Theory (topology) and Quaternions (complex number systems). I was a consistent A+ student in my mathematics classes and scored the highest possible score on my IB Higher Level Mathematics Exams.

As someone entering college, I am closer in age to the students who I tutor. This gives me a good understanding of where they are coming from and how best I can communicate with them.

In the past 2 years, my experience tutoring students in English and Latin and leading the Math Society has led to me developing a passion for working with students one-on-one to improve their skills and knowledge.

I am studying Mathematics full-time, as it is the subject I am most passionate about. It is one of the most subtly beautiful subjects there is, and I look forward to trying to impart that passion to students. Mathematics did not always come easily to me, and as such, I understand the struggles associated with learning its difficult concepts, which gives me insight into what strategies I can convey to best demonstrate topics.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is your typical process for working with a new student?

In the first session, it is important to first establish A) The curriculum and content the student is working with, and B) The student's baseline understanding and areas of strength and weakness.

I take a student-centric approach. I believe in helping them where they believe they need help (while also providing my own insight into where I think they could improve). That means if they have particular problems or projects they wish to work on, we will focus on those. I will also work through example problems with them (and, where appropriate and will deepen understanding, mathematical proofs of concepts) and provide practice problems.

### What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a high school diploma and am currently enrolled as a Mathematics major at the undergraduate level. I scored the highest possible score on my mathematics exam, my AP Statistics exam, and my AP Computer Science exam.

I am currentlyl enrolled in two coursera courses to improve my teaching:

Foundations of Teaching For Learning: Being A Teacher

Motivating Gen Z Learners: What Parents and Teachers Need to Know

### What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with high school students, but am open to working with students K-12.

### What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

Questions to consider:

What is the curriculum / syllabus of the course you are enrolled in?

What past courses in that subject area have you taken?

What are your strengths in that subject area?

What are your weaknesses in that subject area?

Is there specific help you need or desire?
