I would tell a student to look for a teacher who has experience teaching your class subject or is able to do the due diligence to prepare for the topics you need to understand if confident they can help.
Students should think about why they are having difficulty with the subject and be able to communicate that. When did you first notice you needed help? How helpful are their primary instructors? When are you available? What are your short term needs and goals? What are your long term goals?
