My two daughters are learning with Jessica (4th and 7th grader). She is very patient, efficient and professional (covering multiple subjects). We really appreciate her assistance during this difficult time that the kids could not only catch up but also steadily enhance their academic performance.

  • Lynette

Jessica has been invaluable to our family. She worked with both of our children. Now that the last child is off to college we will miss Jessica's enthusiasm.

  • Elizabeth

Jessica is an excellent tutor. She has been with our family for over three years and she worked well with both my son who takes very high level classes and with my daughter who has some learning challenges. She is great with both of them. She is always on time and ready to work. She knows all of the subjects she commits to and can work well at a fast pace and is patent and effective with those who need more time to process. I highly recommend her.

She is knowledgeable about multiple subjects and is really friendly to work with.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I look for what the student already knows, so that I can build on those ideas. With a few short diagnostic exercises, I can determine where to focus our efforts for optimal outcomes.

I also consider both what each student wants to learn and needs to know for courses or work.

I keep the tone of my sessions casual, friendly, and respectful. I love tutoring, so I see it as an opportunity to learn as well as teach.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in English

10 years experience teaching college composition

10 years experience tutoring (all subjects)

Over 3,000 tutoring sessions completed.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

Standard price = $45/hr

How did you get started teaching?

I taught as a graduate student at UNLV in Las Vegas in order to pay for my Master's Degree and found it suited me perfectly.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with students from age six to sixty, on a tight budget, wealthy, of every race and ethnicity, rural, and urban. Recently I have been tutoring students who tend to be high achievers and looking for competitive edge, but I work well with all types of learners. I have experience with gifted and unusual thinkers as well as students with ADHD and ODD and those along the spectrum.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I live in Oregon and love the outdoors, so hiking, backpacking, canoeing or any nature-gazing trips are always beloved events throughout the summer while reading, writing, and watching movies are common in the winter. Lately I've taken up growing vegetables from seed.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Experience matters! Live and learn, as they say.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

Do I work well with others? Do I truly desire to improve? Would it benefit me to work with an expert?
