About

Hi there! My name is Desi. I am originally from Marin County, California. I'm currently a Junior at Oregon State University where I study Sociology with a focus in Crime and Justice, and I also minor in Psychology. After I graduate and receive my BA, I plan on going to graduate school to get a degree in Law Studies. I have always been very passionate about my education, and expanding my knowledge. My mother is a high school counselor, my father is a former high school history teacher, and my step-father is a high school special-education teacher. Growing up with educators as my parents, I always valued school and staying on top of my work. I also got to see the impact each of them made on the students they taught which has inspired me to share my knowledge with others, while also making a lasting and impactful relationship with them. Additionally, I was a student-athlete all throughout high school and for my first year in college where I received a full-ride scholarship to play D-II volleyball at Saint Anselm College in NH. This has allowed me to understand the discipline it takes to play a sport at a high level, while also being committed to school work.

Because I am still currently in school myself, I very much understand the importance of having a teacher that you feel you can really connect with and enjoy learning from. I love knowing that I have the capability to not only help others with work they may find to be challenging, but that I can also make it an interesting and enjoyable experience. I personally love to study English, History, and Social Science. This past year I received a 4.0 all three terms, despite classes becoming remote halfway through the school year. I understand that remote learning comes with its challenges, and I look forward to helping others through it.

Frequently asked questions

When working with someone new, I first like to get to know each other. Learning about the strengths and weaknesses a student possesses academically is important for me to gage where they are. I then like to get an understanding of the material, and build a plan on how to approach a goal the student has. I am always open to questions or concerns.

I have always loved helping both younger and older students with their work, and learning material that may be challenging for them. I am often asked to peer review both high school and college level papers in all different subjects, as I care a lot about proper grammar and the overall flow of a paper. Through my many years of experience in babysitting, I have also worked with younger children on lower-level work as well.

Pricing can depend on the lesson material. However, most lessons will start at around $25-$30 an hour.

I would recommend looking for a teacher who you feel you may be able to connect with and enjoy learning from. You should feel confident that when you leave the lesson you have gained more knowledge about the subject material, but you also have had a good time.

It is very important to reflect on one's personal adademic strengths and weaknesses. I personally have not always been generally that great at math and some sciences, however, I have always excelled in english and social sciences. It's important for your teachers to know about you, and different ways in which you personally thrive in a classroom setting. As for me, I am a visual learner more than anything else. This means I can absorb more information through watching a video than I can by reading a textbook. Although both are important methods of learning, my teachers know to incorporate both within their lessons when I relay to them that I am a visual learner.
