About

I simply listen to my tutees as they explain their way through problem solving. Doing so helps me gain an understanding of how they are processing the concepts so I can better meet their learning needs. I have been told by students, tutees, and their parents that I have a gift for explaining difficult concepts in a manner that is more understandable.

Most students dislike math for various reasons. I enjoy being a part of the solution. It makes my day to hear a student say, "Oh, I get it now." I am licensed secondary mathematics teacher and have been ranked as "most effective" in the state of Ohio for student growth.

Frequently asked questions

Every student processes information differently, so I first listen to a student explain where he/she is having difficulty. Then I continue listening as the student works through a problem situation so that I can identify where the misconception is happening. At that point, I repeatedly coach the student correctly through the process allowing him/her to ask questions of clarification as needed, while gradually increasing the level of difficulty to increase skill and build confidence.

I am a licensed secondary mathematics teacher (grades 7 - 12), I've been teaching since 1995. I also have a master's degree in curriculum and instruction. Although I'm licensed at the secondary level, I've also taught and tutored at the post-secondary level.

I charge $35 for 1 hour sessions and $50 for sessions that are 1.5 hours.

During my undergraduate studies, I majored in computer science and minored in mathematics. As a part of my work study sophomore year, the chairperson of my department decided I could be best used as a math tutor than working in the library. So I worked as a math tutor until I graduated, even after no longer needing work study. Upon graduation, I continued working at the university in a similar compacity until I began working as a computer programmer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I joined the company's tutoring program on Thursday afternoons for the students in the Milwaukee public school system. It was there I found my calling. I returned to Dayton, Ohio, started a program for teacher certification, and the rest is history.

I have worked in urban, public school districts my entire career. Within each of those districts I have worked various students who were gifted, students needing an individualized education program (IEP), and general eduation students.

I was ranked "most effective" by the state of Ohio for student growth in Algebra 1.

You want a teacher who not only understands the math content, but can explain it so his/her students can understand.

What task does my teacher want me to do?

Do I believe I can complete the task(s)? Why or why not?
