About

I help students truly understand mathematical concepts, believe that they can do math, and minimize math phobia. I have been teaching math for over 20 years in both high school and middle school. I taught math for 2 years at an American school in London, 8 years in NYC public schools and the past 14 years at a private school in NJ. I worked as an engineer in the United States and England before deciding to become a math teacher. I have a BS in Civil Engineering and an MS In secondary mathematics education.

As a teacher, tutor and coach, I have always enjoyed working with children and adolescents. I really enjoy helping students come to an understanding of ideas and seeing that moment of recognition in their eyes.

Frequently asked questions

Initially I discuss with the student and parent what his or her needs are.  I will meet with the student to understand what they are working on and determine areas in need of clarification and support.  If a student is looking to enrich their mathematical education, I can develop creative lessons to encourage that.

My initial background is in engineering, though with great love of math and the desire to work with adolescents and teens I became a math teacher over 20 years ago. I have also coached basketball and been an assistant coach for my children's soccer teams.

At present, I am only available to tutor remotely and only on the weekend. My weekday schedule is full. I will respond to your request if you specify that you are looking for Saturday Remote or Sunday Remote lessons. The cost of online lessons begins at $60/45 minutes for younger students studying foundational math and $80/hour for middle and high school students. I will have greater availability in the summer for those looking for to maintain skills, enrich their learning or test prep.
Initially an engineer, I always enjoyed teaching and coaching and decided that my true calling was in education. After only a few years of working as an engineer, in 1999 I began teaching at a middle school in Brooklyn. A year later I was offered the opportunity to work at a specialized high school and so I moved to a high school in NYC.
I have worked with students of all levels of ability and diverse populations. My students represent different racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic groups.
In March 2023, I was hired to work with a young man who was struggling with algebra. As he was just a freshman, his parents had wanted to give him the time and opportunity to figure things out but after failing both the 1st and 2nd marking periods, they were fearful that he would fail the class for the year and need to attend summer school. After working with him a few times, he shared with me that in middle school he had been "okay" in math, he felt this year his teacher didn't like him and he didn't like her as a result. I could tell that he was feeling frustrated and lacked confidence in his abilities. While he was initially appalled that I started from the beginning of the curriculum, he quickly realized that it was necessary to truly understand the concepts that he was covering in his class at school. I encouraged him as he began to make connections and understand some of the concepts, and he grew more comfortable and confident. At the end of the 3rd marking period he passed but having failed the first two quarters he was still in jeopardy of failing for the year. He worked hard in the final marking period and did "okay" scoring in the high 70's on his cumulative final exam. By the end of our time together he was able to ask for help not only from me but from his classroom teacher too. He realized that he was still "okay" in math, that it was okay to ask for help and more than that, it showed that you cared when you did!
When looking for the ideal tutor be as specific as you can regarding your own needs and availability. Make sure that they are comfortable teaching the subject matter you need help with.
What areas of math do I need help with? What concepts do I know well and what concepts do I need help or practice with? Does in-person or remote tutoring work best for me? When am I available to meet? Is my schedule flexible or do I need or want a fixed day scheduled? How many times a week and for how long would I like to meet with the tutor?
