Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The approach can vary from student to student and situation to situation. The approach will also be subject dependent. My approach with a student learning to improve his or her writing will be different than with a student who needs help with trigonometry.
With most math students, we will often start by reviewing a homework they are struggling with. Oftentimes, underlying weaknesses in building block skills are revealed. We may then spend some time building up those skills. I will often create problems tailored to the students' needs.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelor's in education and have been working as a private tutor for 10 years.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students as young as 4 up through college level. I have worked with students ranging from those with disabilites to honors students.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher that is willing to move at your pace and that will take as long as is necessary to break things down. The teacher is working for you, not the other way around.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How long have you been working with students?
What would be your approach to helping a student understand something that he or she is struggling with?
