About
I have over 30 years experience teaching middle school mathematics, algebra, geometry, algebra II/trig, SAT Prep and pre-calculus in a classroom setting more than 30 years experience tutoring those subjects which includes grade 5 through 12 NYS Common Core/N-Gen . As a magna cum laude graduate of St. John’s University, (3.73) and with a BS in mathematics my experience began with tutoring at the Higher Educational Opportunity Program. I expanded to independent tutoring and further developed as a classroom teacher.
If I have inspired a student, I feel gratified. If I notice that a student has an unusual passion for a topic, I create challenges designed to empower rather than to simply praise.
Parental involvement is paramount. Many of my students have been considered at-risk and often come from single parent families. Sensitivity to this situation requires special understanding. In all scenarios cooperation among student, teacher and parent is the ideal means of insuring that optimal academic and emotional growth takes place.
Cookie Cutter style methods are out of the question for me. I teach a student by tailoring my style to accommodate his/her needs, not mine. After each tutoring lesson, it is so important to spend 5-10 minutes discussing the lesson and accomplishments of the child with the parent(s). Learning is a teacher-student-parent process that involves not just academic ability, but understanding human growth.
I enjoy seeing the students learn and grow academically. I enjoy seeing students "get it" and smile with amazement as they realize they most certainly do have the ability to understand mathematics.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first day I get to know the student including his/her struggles, attitude about the subject and what he/she fears. We then talk about what our mutual goals are and how we can achieve them. I also test the student to see what level is most comfortable for him/her and what abilities and weaknesss exist.
