About

What is NCWS? In April 2008, Nesmith Community Writing Services (NCWS) was founded and headquartered in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The organization also serves High Point, Greensboro, surrounding areas, and online global communities. NCWS is a freelance business that offers private 1-on-1 sessions ("1on1s") at any convenient location (i.e. home, library, café/Starbucks, bookstore, church, after-school program sites, online platforms, NCWS Home Office, etc.) in accordance with our slogan "...Where Learning Comes to YOU." Of course, many of these locations are unavailable due to COVID-19. Online interactive videochat sessions are available on different mediums, as well.

Services offered? Our PreK-12 & College learner services are for those who seek coaching and extra practice on common core curriculum (i.e. Pre-K fundamentals, reading, math, science, social studies, Spanish & ELL fluency lessons and EOG/EOC/SAT/ACT/GED/DMV driver's testing) based on one's learning style. Writing, editing, drafting, peer review and career profiling services are also offered for adult learners and professionals from multiple disciplines.

Schoolyear sessions began Monday, August 17, 2020. Since virtual learning is in effect, NCWS has redesigned its program to include virtual/e-learning support (in-home visits while the tutor/learning coach wears a mask; it is optional for learners to wear masks being in the home setting). Support is in place to assist learners with understanding how to maneuver and use the statewide platforms, as well as live session mediums like Zoom, Microsoft Teams and the like.

NCWS will also continue to go over curriculum concepts as a refresher and clarify components that learners do not fully understand during after-school Learning From Home (LFH) online 1on1s. To remain compliant with social distancing, after-school sessions are being held online for now. Pre-K, Spanish/ELL fluency and adult professional services remain in effect, too.

Session scheduling? Each week, the session schedule is coordinated on Saturdays and Sundays. Operation hours are M-F starting at 10:00am - 4:30pm, 6:00pm - 9:00pm. After hours & weekend sessions are by appointment only.

HomeworkHotline (HH) hours are Mon-Sat from 12pm-12am. Most learners take pics of work on which he/she needs help & text 336-660-4148 or email [email protected]. We check for accuracy or help with completing assignments/projects. As for studying, test prep, extra practice and notetaking, HH helpers work with me to set up a plan depending on the subject.

We are incredibly grateful for the dedication and expertise our daughter’s tutor has provided over the years. Their ability to make learning engaging while building confidence has had a lasting impact. Thanks to their consistent support, guidance, and high expectations, our daughter has maintained Level 5 scores on her EOGs for the past three years. Beyond the academic success, we’ve seen tremendous growth in her critical thinking, study habits, and love for learning. We highly recommend them to any family looking for a tutor who truly cares about their students’ success and long-term development.

Working with NCWS has been an incredible support for both me and my daughter. As a college student working toward nursing degree, I’ve personally benefited from her patience and clear teaching style. She explains things in a way that truly sticks.
My daughter has worked with her from first and is now in the sixth and the growth has been amazing. Now in sixth grade, she’s making honor roll and feels much more confident in her abilities.
We’re both so grateful for her dedication, encouragement, and consistency. I highly recommend NCWS to anyone looking for a tutor who genuinely makes a difference.

Our experience working with NCWS has been nothing short of amazing. Mrs Nesmith is definitely in her calling working with/assisting individuals reach their maximum potential academically. She recognizes each childs needs, challenges and believes in them while encouraging them to believe in themselves and their capabilities. She has played a huge part of my grandson success throughout his school years , she is informative, professional and a part of our family forever and I might add she has never missed a graduation. She is passionate about her work and is a true blessing for anyone she crosses paths with.

    Frequently asked questions

Sessions are typically 1 hour. During sessions, the learner & tutor/learning coach focuses on making sure all assignments are completed and submitted. If they are not, we get the assignments done first based on the motto #CourseworkFirst. Once all assignments are confirmed as completed and submitted, the tutor/learning coach works with the learner on clarifying and understanding challenging concepts. Extra practices, notes and/or visual aids are given to the learner and done with the tutor/learning coach.

I, Dorothy Nesmith-Austin, am the Owner & CEO of NCWS. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Spanish with a Minor Concentration in Political Science, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Paralegal Studies. I've volunteered and worked in writing centers and learning coach services covering common core subjects and Spanish language fluency for 20 years. From my decades of experience working with learners of all ages (PreK-12 & College/Universities), my team and I relate significantly to the services we offer.

Costs? Regarding costs for services, 1on1s are usually $20/session for Pre-K learners, $25/session for K-5th grade learners and $30/session for 6th-12th grade learners. Sessions last between 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on grade level/age group. If sessions go over an hour, a discretionary charge of $10-$15 will incur.

I got started tutoring while I was a student getting my Bachelor degrees. I wanted to develop a network in which I could be helpful for my colleagues and vice versa. From these network, a learning coach organization grew and continues to expand.

NCWS has worked with diverse learners from Pre-K to College/University level (ages 3 to 65). Learners come from different cultural backgrounds and ethnicities (African, African-American, Caucasian, Colombian, Mexican, Peruvian, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, Latino, Vietnamese and Phillipino). Also, we have assisted learners with modified IEP and 504 plans.

Recently, we helped with a major lesson planning project for a growing charter school in Arizona. Our NCWS team contributed effective plans that have proven to be useful during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before looking to hire any tutor/learning coach, I strongly advise learners to make sure they have reviewed all materials provided by the instructor or personal research. If every method has been explored, then have a list of what is challenging about the concept or matter.

What is it about this concept or matter that is confusing or challenging?

Have I looked through all materials provided to me? If so, is there something confusing or challenging in the materials?

Have I tried looking for better ways to understand the concept or matter on my own?
