About

I am a current graduate student at UNC Greensboro. Previously I was an associate teacher at Evergreen Community Charter School and I've been a tutor for K-12 students for over seven years. I am versatile and experienced in every subject and can tutor both math and reading/writing or science/social studies as needed! I am creative and I love finding new ways for a student to learn. I understand that everyone learns differently, and often hands-on, exciting activities that motivate a student are a big part of helping them grow.

I love seeing the spark of curiosity in my students. I find it incredible when a student who has been reluctant to learn in the past finally finds what works for them and feels encouraged and interested in the topic. I am amazed by the imaginations of children and youth, and I believe in fostering their creativity and excitement for learning.

    Frequently asked questions

If the student is in elementary or middle school, I start off by speaking with the parent (s) on the phone to see what they are looking for in tutoring. Then I plan accordingly for the first meeting with the student. I always welcome the students and encourage them to keep trying. I remind them that it's okay to make mistakes--it is all part of the learning process. If the student is in high school or college, I let them take the lead on what they are looking for. They generally bring in the assignments and I support them in studying and completing homework.
I am trained in active reading, a skill used when helping younger students learn to read. I am very experienced as a tutor and teacher with 3rd-7th grade math curriculums. I also am familiar with the EL Education model for hands-on/ project-based learning. For older students, I am familiar with close reading analysis and comprehension. As a college graduate in English, I have taken specialty courses in ancient, renaissance, and modern literature, poetry writing, nonfiction writing, and fiction writing. I also have experience working with college and grad students on papers of all types as a Writing Center Consultant.

I started tutoring when I was in high school and volunteered at my local library in their "Get Ready for Kindergarten" program. Inspired by the enthusiasm of all the children, I continued tutoring to this day.
I have worked with students of all ages, K-12, college students, and grad students. I currently work as a writing consultant for college and grad students. I'm was previously an associate teacher with sixth grade. As an AVID tutor, I worked with students at Asheville City Schools in grades 6-12. For the Y-Readers program, I worked with kindergarteners through second graders who were below grade level in reading. This included students learning English as a second language. I have also worked with students with autism and special needs. As a private tutor, I've worked with grades first grade through high school.
