I am an associate teacher at Evergreen Community Charter School and I've been a tutor for K-12 students for over six years. I am versatile and experienced in every subject and can tutor both math and reading/writing or science/social studies as needed! I am creative and I love finding new ways for a student to learn. I understand that everyone learns differently, and often hands-on, exciting activities that motivate a student are a big part of helping them grow.
I love seeing the spark of curiosity in my students. I find it incredible when a student who has been reluctant to learn in the past finally finds what works for them and feels encouraged and interested in the topic. I am amazed by the imaginations of children and youth, and I believe in fostering their creativity and excitement for learning.
Eliana has been tutoring my 5th grader in math for the last month or so and my daughters confidence level has increased - does not need as much assistance with homework!!
She is nice, well educated and all three of my children love her.
If the student is in elementary or middle school, I start off by speaking with the parent (s) on the phone to see what they are looking for in tutoring. Then I plan accordingly for the first meeting with the student. I always welcome the students and encourage them to keep trying. I remind them that it's okay to make mistakes--it is all part of the learning process.
If the student is in high school, I let them take the lead on what they are looking for. They generally bring in the assignments and I support them in studying and completing homework.
I am trained in active reading, a skill used when helping younger students learn to read. I am very experienced as a tutor and teacher with 3rd-7th grade math curriculums. I also am familiar with the EL Education model for hands-on/ project-based learning. For older students, I am familiar with close reading analysis and comprehension. As a college graduate in English, I have taken specialty courses in ancient, renaissance, and modern literature, poetry writing, nonfiction writing, and fiction writing.
$30/hr for elementary-middle
$35/hr for high school
$40/hr for college or above
I started tutoring when I was in high school and volunteered at my local library in their "Get Ready for Kindergarten" program. Inspired by the enthusiasm of all the children, I continued tutoring to this day.
I have worked with students of all ages, K-12. I'm currently an associate teacher with sixth grade. As an AVID tutor, I worked with students at Asheville City Schools in grades 6-12. For the Y-Readers program, I worked with kindergarteners through second graders who were below grade level in reading. This included students learning English as a second language. I have also worked with students with autism and special needs. As a private tutor, I've worked with grades first grade through high school.
What would you like help with? What are you confused about OR what are you curious about? What is your favorite subject and why? What is your learning style?
