About

I formally taught Algebra 1 and 2 at East High School in Kansas City Public Schools in-person and online during COVID-19 school closures before moving to DC September 2020. I have a master's in secondary education and a passion for working with culturally and linguistically diverse learners. I’m certified to teach 5th-12th grade math and help my students draw connections between math and the real world in order to become critical thinkers. I teach integral life skills such as perseverance, grit, and how to work through problems. As the math department chair, cross country coach, community partner, and advocate for educational equity, my passion for education extends beyond the traditional classroom and into the public sphere where I work to ensure that one day every child can attain an excellent education regardless of their background.

My positive and high energy approach maximizes student engagement and I know how to reach students in a variety of different methods. I love seeing students' self confidence grow when they tackle tough challenges and helping others reach and even exceed their goals motivates me to crush my own goals! Working with the amazing students I had at East High School inspires me to tutor students like them afterschool as well. There is nothing more satisfying than guiding a student to that missing piece of knowledge they need in order for it to all make sense!

AV

When I came to Lauren I was feeling totally frustrated and hated math. She explains things very clearly and never made me feel stupid for not understanding something. Now I am majoring in Finance in college for which I have to use a lot of math. This would not be possible if not for all the help I got from her when I was in high school and as a Freshman in college.

Frequently asked questions

My most successful student relationships start with the student being open in sharing their math autobiography with me. What brought them to tutoring and what have they loved or hated about working with previous teachers? What are they seeking to accomplish in life and how might improving their math skills get them there? I will always be real with students about my own winding path to becoming a math teacher and answer any questions they have so that we can have a strong foundation of respect and understanding for each other as we begin this process.

In college, I double majored in Economics and Political Science which were math heavy, particularly in statistics, but I did not know I wanted to be a teacher until later. I came to teaching through a highly selective and presitgious alternative certification program called Teach For America. Throughout this program, I have honed my leaderships skills both inside and outside the classroom and I am part of a grassroots movement to transform education in the U.S.
