About

I love working with young people and learning from their wonderful, fresh ideas. I love learning and enjoy helping my students find ways to learn that make it easy and exciting. I care about each of my students and do my best to coach them to reach their goals and fulfill their dreams. My experience has enabled me to work with all types of students. I have taught middle school, high school, adult education, and at the unviersity. I have taught at urban and suburbon schools, public and private schools, and schools for the gifted. I am certified to teach English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Latin. I am trained as an AP Writing instructor and was the academic coordinator for Project Upwardbound at Oakland University (tutoring and ACT prep).

I enjoy the students - each is different and unique. My background and training in instructional design has prepared me for the challenge of tayloring the lessons for the uniqueness of each learner, I love the look of satisfaction in the student's eyes when he/she have achieved the goal. I work at building a rapport with students.

Frequently asked questions

I really enjoy gettting to know my students so I can help identify their learning styles, strengths and needs, so I generally ask for a longer session the first time but only charge the agreed session fee. First we focus on assignments and the challenges they present.  Next we work on the needs which, once met, will result in excellent performance.  I collaborate with my students and help them develop a plan for their success.

I recived all my degrees and Michigan Teaching Certificate from Wayne StateUniversity. I have Bachelor of Arts with majors in English and Social Studies, minors in Science and Latin. My Master's degree is in writing curriculum which enables me to create successful plans of study. My Specialist is in leadership which trained me to work effectively with people. I also did postgraduate work in English at the University of Michigan.

I charge $25 for a one hour session and can be contacted at any time, for any additional help with assignments, projects, or questions. I do expect that it is normal for my students to contact me several times a month with questions and expect no compensention for every contact. If the outside-of-session contacts become very numerous, I might request that we form a plan for compensention but only if the outside-of-session contacts add up to several hours per month.

I have always loved the excitement of learning new things and decided to be a teacher when I was in middle school. In high school I often worked with classmates in study groups.  As a member of the teen club at my church, I  volunteered to teach the special students during the scheduled religious education sessions.  By then, I knew I loved working with students.

My experience is rather extensive.  I have taught in urban, suburban, private. and public schools as well as schools for the gifted.  I have taught students in middle school, high school, adult education, GED completion, ACT preparation, and Advanced Placement. At Oakland University, I tau;ght secondary teaching methods, and  courses at the Honors College.

I feel most fortunate to have maintained an ongoing relationship with several of my former students who still contact me and meet me occationally for lunch.

The most recent event occurred when the schools had to go virtual during the Pandemic.  As happened with many students, two of my grandchildren found virtual learning difficult and fell behind in their lessons.  I worked with them and their teachers forming a plan of work to meet future deadlines as well as make up missed lessons.  We enjoyed working together, in spite of the challenges we faced.  They were very pleased when they not only reached their goals but exceeded expectations.  The whole family was very proud of them.

Certainly you would want to check their qualifications and experience.  Do a meet-and-greet, so you can find someone you will be comfortable working with.  Asking for help and accepting it is not always easy, so try to find someone who will listen to you and you can speak with honestly.

What do I enjoy doing and why? Why do I like certain things and dislike others?  What are my interests and why do they catch my attention? What do I consider easy? Why are certain things difficult and others easy?  How do I learn best?  What helps me remember?  What do I need to know or must I be able to do in order to successfully complete the task?
