Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I typically start by asking the parent how the child has been in their classes. I then give a pretest to gauge their level of understanding. After giving lessons on new concepts, we go over assignments due for class and review for exams.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am currently a junior in college, and I have been taking upper level classes all throughout my life. My main focus and favorite subject is math, so I always love tutoring other students in different math concepts.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I do not have a high rate for tutoring, given that I am still in college and do not yet have a degree. However, depending on the grade level, I will charge more for more complex subjects.
How did you get started teaching?
I was recommended by my high school counselor and the National Honors Society (NHS) as a community tutor. After that, I received many emails from parents about tutoring. All of my tutoring sessions have been successful!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all types of students who have different strengths and weaknesses. I make sure to help them work on their weaknesses and use their strengths to their advantage. Students often have the motivation to do better in class, which I think is crucial for tutoring to be successful!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
When it comes to tutoring for subjects such as math, it's important to find someone who not only is very knowledgeable in the subject, but also can make it fun. Students will not learn if they just sit in front of a book and are told to read. It's crucial that they enjoy learning more!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should think about two things before talking to teachers about their needs: how they are struggling in terms of specific concepts, and how they are struggling with study skills. Both are very important for succeeding in classes.
