College And High School, Math And Science Tutor
About
I am an engineer working in the field of renewable energy. I'm passionate about using math and science to make the world a better place, and education is the starting point for that. I have tutored at the mainly at the high school level, but some college as well. I have tutored students from Algebra 1 to Calculus, as well as SAT, ACT, and PRAXIS prep.
I think the world will need more STEM professionals in the future, and everyone should understand the basics of math and science to be able to understand and participate in the modern world, and influence how we can use technology for the better. Understanding those concepts early and at a young age will be very important for that future.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
-I like to get an understanding of what the student wants first, mainly, what type of career they are aiming for. From there, try to understand why they are taking the course that they need some assistance with.
-Once we get an understanding of why we are working together, I try to focus on how to work. Some students are better with visuals, some with word problems and analogies, some with just a variety of examples. I try to understand what makes concepts click, and start there.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.S. and M.S. in Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, and am a licensed professional engineer in the state of Maryland. I have worked with high school age students the last few three years as a part time teacher and a tutor, most recently for a year at a Sylvan Learning Center branch as a upper level math tutor.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Typical rate is $50/hr, but it can go up and down based on need and time to prep. For example, if we've worked together for a while and the student is clearly passionate, I'm quite comfortable reducing the rate. For more advanced concepts like college level math or science, I will need time to prep and that will be grouped into the $/hr. All rates are negotiable.
How did you get started teaching?
I was originally a tutor in Baltimore City while I was in undergrad. I started a program to help students understand basic math and science concepts to pass the local standardized testing for high school. I enjoyed it so much that I've tutored part-time after I graduated.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students looking for help on:
-High School Math: Algebra, Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-Cal, and Calculus
-Entry Sciences: Physics, Chemistry
-Standardized Testing: SAT, ACT, PRAXIS
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
At the beginning of the partnership, explai to the teacher what you've been successful at (in or out of school), and try to think of why. From there, we can find parallels in what we are currently studying to see how to help concepts stick. It can be surprising how interrelated so many things will be to math fundamentals.
