About
I am a certified high school mathematics teacher who has taught everything from Pre-Algebra to Pre-Calculus in Maryland. Currently, I am a Mathematics Numeracy Coach for my school district where I have helped grow teachers and students from 14% proficiency on Algebra 1 PARCC to over 53% proficiency in less than one school year. While teaching, more than 60% of my students scored a 4 or 5 on the Algebra 2 PARCC. I was able to make these gains because I consistently sought the challenge of teaching and inspiring lower-achieving students and turning them into critical, higher-order thinking lifelong learners.
I have been teaching for almost 20 years and tutoring for more than 25 years and I spend much of my daily life trying to find the simplest ways to teach difficult mathematical concepts. I have an outstanding command of middle and high school mathematics specifically in developing and implementing curriculum enhancements with a simplified Common Core focus.
Things you can expect from me: subject expertise, patience reliability, tips and tricks for remembering content, study habit ideas, adaptation to your learning style, respect, positive energy, time management skills- your time is money and I respect that.
I have a way of helping make complex subject material kid-friendly and use discovery approaches to learning material. Students internalize and understand the material better when they discover the mathematics on their own rather than you telling them. I also specialize in test-taking strategies and helping get over math anxiety.
Since I'm not in a traditional classroom every day anymore, I enjoy tutoring students because it's nothing like seeing the lightbulb go off when they finally understand a concept they've been struggling with.

However, Monique was patient and found simple ways to explain the material while still
ensuring that my son had an in-depth understanding. Since Monique was my sons tutor,
hes maintained As and Bs for the last 3 years.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I prefer to give a short pre-assessment to determine the needs of the student. From there I am able to quickly assess what is needed and give the parents or the student debriefing of how we will continue with tutoring.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
