About

Hi, my name is Ms Liz, Ms C, or Ms Coit depending on your student's age and preference.

I have a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Zoology (the biology of animals) and I was required to take math up through a year of calculus. I found that I always did my math homework first because it was so much fun. Ultimately, I decided not to pursue Zoology but changed direction to Art and Design and happily worked as a landscape designer for many years.

I found that my landscape design business left me with lots of free time during the colder months. I always loved kids and the flexibility of the hours and the nurturing atmosphere of working in a school environment were appealing so I chose to fill that time with substitute teaching. I have worked as a substitute teacher for 12 years. There were years when I was employed during the winter and didn’t teach but I have always returned to teaching because I found it fulfilling. For the past 10 years, I have mostly worked as a substitute full-time.

I worked in middle schools and elementary schools as a classroom teacher, then for many years primarily in special ed because I found working with students one-on-one and in small groups particularly satisfying. I also take many assignments in Art, GT Science and Math. Over the past couple of years, I have had several experiences teaching math that light up my joy in teaching. I found a real connection to the students and I realized that it brought out my math knowledge, my patience, and my sense of fun in the subject. Opening the kids’ eyes to their ability to solve problems and how much fun it can be was incredibly rewarding. When a friend recently suggested I might enjoy tutoring math I immediately investigated it.

I am a very kind but strict teacher. I have had years in the practice of patience with special ed students but I also love working with average students and those who are quick to find the answers. Helping a student to the joy of understanding and accomplishment is always my best reward. I would love the opportunity to tutor your student and help them find a sense of competence in improving in a subject they once found challenging.
