About

I'm Skylar! I have a bachelors degree in math, and 5 years of experience teaching high school courses including algebra, statistics, and precalculus. I also have experience tutoring students from elementary level up to undergraduate mathematics.

I think math is really cool, but I know that not everyone does. I will meet you where you are, and we will work together to achieve your goals. Although I can tutor multiple different areas, some of my favorite things to tutor are algebra, trigonometry, and statistics.

I'm passionate about making math accessible and engaging - I love working with students to figure out how they can learn math best and tailor my tutoring to meet their needs.

I have taught both remedial and advanced courses, and I enjoy helping my students succeed no matter the level. My lessons are designed to build both skills and confidence, and to develop general mathematical and numerical literacy that is transferable from one topic to the next. I have experience with specific learning platforms and programs such as IXL, Desmos, Khan Academy, and Eureka Math, and am easily able to adapt to other such systems.

Skylar has been nothing short of a gift! My kiddo is smart but personality conflict with her math teacher was causing her to shut down. Skylar not only bolstered her skills, he rebuilt her confidence so that she was able to turn her grade around and pass the year. We are so, SO, SO grateful that we found Skylar!

My sons really enjoyed working with Skylar. His enthusiasm and deep understanding of math concepts was inspiring to them. I was impressed by the many different games, tricks, and alternative ways Skylar had to present the material. Skylar was always able to find a way to help them break through mental blocks and feel confident in their ability. I saw a big improvement in their math scores.

Frequently asked questions

I like to get to know a student by talking about their interests and their experiences with math. If the student is working towards general improvement, wants to learn something new, or is preparing for a test, I will generally have them work through problems so I can assess their ability and understand their thought processes. If a student wants help with a specific class or assignment, I will ask for details about the class. Regardless of the type of tutoring, I will make sure that the student leaves the first session having learned something new.
I have a bachelors degree in mathematics, and a teaching certification for grades 7-12 math in Maryland.
My standard rate is $90 per hour or $60 per half hour. I also offer a sliding scale for students who need it.
I started tutoring in college, and loved it so much that I never stopped!
I have experience working with middle schoolers, high schoolers, and college/adult learners. I have worked with students who love math, students who hate math, students trying to pass a class, students who want extracurricular support, and more. I have significant experience working with students with learning disabilities.
Before talking to a teacher, you should be clear about what your goals are and how much time/money/work you are able to put towards your goals. As the person hiring a tutor/teacher, you are the one who sets the expectations, and I want to make sure that I am on the same page as you. Of course, if you're not sure, I can help you figure it out - that's also what I'm here for! Another thing to think about is what you need from a tutor - do you need to be taught the material? Do you need someone to answer questions while you work? Do you need someone to help you stay organized and accountable so that you don't miss steps? All of these are things that tutors can help with, so just let us know what you need.
