I get to know them and how they like to learn. Then, I'll apply that to how I teach them, whether that means giving them more visuals or making references to things they are interested in.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a student currently, which helps me better relate to students. I have been in their shoes lore recently that most and know what many people consider to be this "new math" that they are teaching in schools now.
