Turbo Tutoring
About
If my tutoring students were to describe me, they would say that I have a great sense of humor, love to laugh--and yet somehow still make them work harder than they ever have before. Also, I have tutored students from sixth grade to graduate school and have worked as a private school English teacher for more than 25 years. With the depth and breadth of this experience, I have worked with all types of learning styles.
I love to get to know students as individuals and to work together to discover what motivates them the most. A graduate of Middlebury College, I also hold two Master's degrees, including one in creative writing. Teaching writing is my specialty, but I also have more than two decades of experience prepping students for the SAT, ACT, SSAT, TOEFL, and a number of other standardized tests. What I most enjoy about tutoring is the same as what I most enjoyed as a classroom teacher: 1. I love, love, love to see students improve and to witness how proud they become of themselves when they learn to hurdle their biggest obstacles.
2. I love to laugh with my students and to show them how much they can enjoy their learning.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first step: we need to get to know each other to see if we are a good match for working together. Most importantly, I need to know the student's learning style. To discover this, I ask questions of the parent and the student. Once I have listened carefully to the student and elicited as much information as I can about current needs, then we dive into the subject matter.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I worked as an English teacher for 25+ years at top private schools, including the Groton School and Moses Brown. A graduate of Middlebury College, I hold an MA in English Literature and an MFA in Creative Writing. Additionally, I am Massachusetts certified to teach English and LA, as well as English as a Second Language, to grades 6-12.
FYI: My Turbo Tutoring @MsAnneShaughnessy Facebook page contains many reviews from past students and their parents.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
The initial consultation is free. After that, I charge $95.00 per session, unless students arrange a book of 10 sessions, for which I give a 10% discount. Depending on the student's learning style, we sometimes meet for less than an hour, for which sessions are prorated.
