Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I try to get an idea of where to start by asking the parent or student what topics they need help with or what they are studying in school. I always ask my students if they have homework questions they need help with. Then, we start working through some problems to try to see where they are at in understanding the material.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelors in Mathematics and Secondary Education. I have taken 1 day classes in teen suicide prevention and child sexual abuse prevention. I have taken online trainings in seizure identification. I got my CPR certification for adults and children in 2020, but need to renew it.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$20/hour for KG-4th grade
$25/hour for 5th-8th grade
$30/hour for 9th grade and up
How did you get started teaching?
Before I started school, I played school with my stuffed animals. My second grade teacher was the first one to encourage me to tutor and teach the other students. By third grade, I was the "class tutor" and that lasted through high school. I taught VBS and Sunday School for age 2-3rd grade from 2014-2019. Then I went to college for teaching and did tutoring during that time. I did my student teaching in 7th-12th grade math classrooms.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from age 2-college. I have worked with students with dyslexia, dyscalculia, reading comprehension problems, ADHD, and mild autism. I have also worked with gifted students.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
In January 2021, I started working with a student who was at beginning pre-k levels in his second year of KG. We worked together everyday. By May, we were starting on 1st grade material.
In late August 2022, I started working with a student who was at beginning KG levels in 2nd grade. By February, he was at beginning 2nd grade levels.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Everyone is going to make mistakes while learning something new. A good tutor/teacher should be able to help you figure out where your mistakes are and provide guidance of how to fix them, not do the work for you. A good tutor/teacher should also be able to explain something multiple ways to help you understand it.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What topics/concepts do you think you are having trouble with?
Is there a certain step in the material that you are getting stuck on?
Is there a certain way that you prefer information to be given to you? Reading it, hearing it, using pictures, using touchable objects like counting cubes?
