About this tutor

I am passionate about helping my students understand and enjoy doing math. I customize my teaching style to each student. I have been tutoring or teaching for over 20 years. I communicate with parents and teachers as needed to better understand my students. Most students have been with me for several years and we now do online tutoring. I focus on understanding concepts- how and why- not memorizing. I also work on test-taking strategies. I have degrees in physics, engineering, and teaching. I have a teaching certificate for math 7-12 to include experience with AP courses. I have taught Middle and High School in Washington, Arizona, and New York. I also have experience teaching college - cadets at West Point United States Military Academy. I became a teacher after retiring from the Army.

I absolutely love working with people, especially teens. I get a lot of satisfaction from seeing their confidence build. I enjoy learning new ways to explain math and science to students in a way they can understand.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

My goal is to give the student confidence. I talk to the parents and students to set goals and find out about learning styles.  Sometimes, I communicate with the teacher at the family's request. Then I look at my student's tests and watch him/her do some work to understand the student's thinking processes.  Once I have a familiarity with the student's  strengths and weakness, I am able to devise a teaching strategy for each student. I work on understanding concepts- why and how - as opposed to memorization. We also do extensive test preparation, which I feel confident about.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a BS in Physics from West Point United States Military Academy, an MS in Engineering from Oregon State University, and a Masters in Teaching Mathematics. I taught engineers for three years at West Point, middle school math for two years in Flagstaff, AZ, and filled several high school leave replacement  assignments in New York. Additionally, I was an Army officer, leading soldiers for 16 years, and a Girl Scout Leader for over 100 Girls.
