About
I love being able to personalize my lessons to the interests and needs of my students. For example, one of my students needed to work on fluency, so I found some fun poems that he loved and couldn't wait to read over and over again to family and friends. Another student loves super heroes so we worked on vocabulary and comprehension relating to his favorite subject. I am happy when my students enjoy our sessions and feel successful.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with a new student, I will ask about the child's interests and hobbies in order to match them with engaging materials. I will use these materials to access reading fluency and comprehension, as well as written skills including organization and developlment of stories and essays. Based on the results, I choose materials appropriate to his/her needs.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Master's Degree in Education and Social Policy from Northwestern University and a Reading Specialist Certification from National Louis University. I have also attended numerous workshops on teaching reading and writing. I taught high school English for eight years, and more recently have been working with middle school and elementary students.
How did you get started teaching?
I spent seven years working in the hospitatlity industry before returning to Northwestern for my teaching degree. I observed many classrooms and volunteered with students before deciding to become a teacher. I loved working with kids, enjoyed being in a school setting, and have always loved reading and writing, so it was an easy choice.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked almost exclusively in multi-cultural settings at the elementary, middle school and high school level. Many students have been English language learners and I speak Spanish which is helpful. I have also worked with regular, lower and upper level students in different settings.
