About

My personal goal as a tutor is to make sure that every student is having fun while learning. There is no reason that any student willing to listen, get out of their comfort zone a bit and work hard cannot succeed in whatever area she/he is having trouble with. I try to tailor my lessons, activities, and light homework to the personality, learning style and time availability of the specific student. You should not expect to master the skill you are working towards in one hour. Especially if the skill is learning a completely new language, it will take time, repetition and a willingness to learn/practice in and outside of our sessions together. I guarantee, though, that with the right approach, focus on fun, and tailored lessons every student will feel more comfortable in the problem area.

A bit about me: I am a recent graduate from Drake University in Iowa. I began as a Music Business major, but realized my passion for the law while taking an ethics class my freshman year. While I still appreciated the music world, and kept my music interest with classes, choir and a music minor, I quickly switched my major to Law, Politics & Society. With this switch, I began my legal career in pursuit of an eventual career in writing policy and now work directly in legislative policy at the state level. I added a Rhetoric major to emphasize my interest in dissecting and analyzing society, relationships and societal communications. I originally took the LSAT and did well above average, but realized that basic law school was not the direction I was interested in and rather wanted to pursue public policy. I now work in legislative policy while pursuing my Master of Legal Studies degree from WashU Law School.

I have never believed in the conventional approach to education for all students. While some definitely benefit from structured lesson plans, homework and assignments, many more succeed in a more free-flowing, conversational environment. I learned this while studying abroad for my senior year of high school, in the lovely land of Germany. I technically graduated high school as a junior, and headed to Germany as a gap year in education. I was still required to go to school, and realized how difficult that had become in my, now, high school graduate mentality. My defiance towards attending classes in Germany, helped me realize the different stages at which students learn and the importance of tailored, one-on-one education. I dedicated my time in Germany to learning the language inside and out and have continued my love of German through a certificate of fluency and constant tutoring throughout college.

Please contact me if you have any questions or if you would like to set up a session! I would love to help you reach your educational goal.

Frequently asked questions

With any new student, I like to make sure I understand what brings them to tutoring. It may be an interest in learning a new skill or a necessity of furhtering their education and/or career. No matter what brings them in, I like to make sure we are on the same page before getting started. I ask each student what they hope to achieve, am clear with my expectations and then lay out a plan to help make their goal a reality.

My undergraduate degree is from Drake University in two programs: Law, Politics & Society (LPS) and Rhetoric. The LPS aspect of my education focused on a concept known as law de jure v. law de facto, or the way the law is written versus the way it is carried out in society. This juxtaposition within the language of the law led to my intrigue with public policy and changing the law through sound policy. To help enrich my education, I added the Rhetoric major to understand the language of the law in a different and more in-depth way. The Rhetoric aspect of my degree focused on the way words and language shape the public understanding of certain events, ideas and values. It helped to solidify my grasp on how the specific language of laws, bills and ordinances effect every day citizens. I am currently pursuing my Master of Legal Studies degree with WashU Law School, which is effectively preparing me for a legal advisory role in policy, legislative services and government affairs.

My standard rate is $30/hour for online and in-person tutoring. I charge a per page fee on proofreading and editing. I work out my proofreading and editing fees based on the subject matter, length of the paper and level of academia.

I work with a variety of students, but focus mainly on those students who are moving from one phase of life to another. Whether that is a high schooler taking the ACT to move into the college arena, a college student looking to go on to grad or law school, or a graduate student finishing her disseration, I am happy to help adult students at any phase in life.
