About

I have a bachelors degree in Mathematics and Math Education as well as a Masters degree in Educational Leadership. I am currently working on a Masters degree in Applied Statistics, Analytics, and Data Science through the University of Kansas Medical Center.

I taught high school math for 6 years and acted as the director of a tutoring center for 1.5 years. As a teacher, I taught the following classes: Advanced 7th grade math (7th grade pre-algebra), 9th grade Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry, Calculus 1, Personal Finance, and Probability/Statistics. I created engaging lessons that explained math content in a way all students could understand and be successful. I also acted as the district Special Education Coordinator and 6-12th grade 504 Coordinator, so I am very familiar and comfortable working with IEPs and 504 Plans.

As a tutor center director, I assessed kids and developed individualized learning plans for them. I assisted students in their math education, working with kids from Kindergarten through college level. Sessions included working on school homework as working to close gaps in learning or providing advanced material for students.

While Math is my strong suit, I am able to assist with most subjects. I know the virtual learning aspect of the 2020-21 school year will be difficult for many students and families. I can explain concepts that students are still struggling with and/or assist with homework completion. I am willing to meet virtually or in-person and work with multiple students at a time.

I love seeing the "light bulb" moments when the students I'm working with understand a concept they've been struggling with. I also absolutely love when parents tell me how much they've seen their child's confidence grow and how much better the relationship has gotten between them without the stress of the school struggles.

Frequently asked questions

I will talk with both the parent and student to get a feel for any problems the student is having with content, the student's attitudes toward the subject, and parent/student expectations of me. I will then watch the student work and look through student answers to get an idea of where the student's knowledge is at. I will then provide any explanations the student needs, talk through some examples, and let the student work independently. My goal is to get the student to a place where he/she is able to work independently.

I generally charge $25/hour. However, rates are subject to change depending on the number of students per session or other family circumstances.

When I was in high school, I discovered a love for math when I was in Calculus AB AP. I had a phenomenal teacher who taught in a way that I understood, the first time, every time he explained something. I always had a love for helping others and enjoyed explaining concepts in several subjects to my peers.

I have worked with students from Kindergarten through college. I have worked with students who are considered advanced or accelerated. I have also worked with students who have learning disabilities or who struggle with certain subjects, including those with IEP goals and 504 plans. I truly believe any student can learn, they just need someone patient who believes in them and can "speak their language."

Make sure it's someone who can explain the concepts in a way that makes sense to you. Some people have a tendency to give away answers. While that is convenient for getting good grades on homework, you will still find yourself struggling on tests and quizzes because you didn't learn the material. Personality is important, too. You want to work with someone you can feel comfortable around and who won't judge you or make you feel bad if it takes you longer to "get" things.

Teachers want (and need) to know what it is you are struggling with. If you can go up to them and say something like "I understand that I'm supposed to solve for x but I don't understand how I'm supposed to know when to add or subtract from both sides" that helps the teacher figure out what help you need.
